Ok so there are some great VST plug ins for cubase SX2...like some really cool drum patches. Now my question is in order to use them I need to get a midi cable and use my keyboard as the controller???

I'm so freaking new to this stuff that i get really frustrated learning it.

so keyboard - midi cable to the computer- then I can use any plugin right?

Sorry I hope this wasnt so bad, and stupid.

You can step edit but it's slow and boring. You could also work out your midi in Hammerhead Rhythm station then import the files into Cubase. You could use a usb keyboard if you like but it's unnecessaryand no it isn't a stupid question.

Just grab a midi keyboard, a midi cable, plug it in and start having fun... you'll be amazed at how quickly you pick it up.

One note... If you find that once you plug in your keyboard and set it up through your plugin, that there's a delay between pressing the note and hearing it... it's called latency and is down to the settings in your soundcard. Depending on which one you have, this can be improved. If your using a Soundblaster you will struggle to get the delay to a usable level.

I use the midi in on my game port and a Audiophile 24/96 (£58 from Millenium Music) and the latency is REALLY short... about 5 milliseconds (1 millisecond = time it takes sound to travel 1 foot!).

Sorry, more there than I was going to put.

Any questions just ask.

hey thanks all.

Where is the drum editor? or hammerhead ?

and yeah i have standard soundblaster so that might be an issue.

Drum editor would be in the edit menu. Of course you need to create a midi track first. How? Check your manual. Hammerhead Rhythm station is a free download. Do a search.

be sure to use the full duplex DX driver for your SB... you can get latency down to around 15ms.. which is useable. DEVICES - DEVICE SETUP - VST MULTITRACK - look in the pulldown menu.

Joe

Why wouldnt you use the midi in on your 2496?

It's purely down to the leads that came with the keyboard. Why buy a new cable to do the same job? Plus the keyboard can be powered through the gameport saving a plug socket.
