First of all, hi there!

I'm trying to record my guitar on the computer. I have a BOSS ME-30 multi efects pedal, and I was trying hooking the left output of the Boss to the line-in of my copmuter. But no matter how much tweaking I do, I can't get a decent tone... Anybody has suggestions, especially concerning the pedal's programming (i.e. tips for getting a good recording tone out of the boss)? Thanx

My setup, if it helps..

ESP ltd m-100

Boss ME-30

P100, 64 Mb ram, Soundblaster 4.1 digital.

any help would be great. Thanx!!

Wellcome to the board...

Yep... Hey, you can't expect answer within minutes... It's midnite downhere, you wan't us to wake up, turning on the PC, check your post and answer it, then go sleep again or what ? :D :D :D

The signal out of ME-30 is too low. It needs amps. Or Pre amp (such mixer do this). Better yet, use amps you have, do miking, then record it through the LINE Input. Don't use Mic Input for sure.

Thanx, but... I think I've noticed teh opposite, when I record direct from the pedal with the patches I use with the amp, I get digital distortion.. the mic, o the other hand, givs me better tone but the signal is waaayyy too weak... what am I doing wrong??

Hello Metallichaos, welcome to the board.

I suspect you have the microphone plugged directly into the soundblaster card. Like the ME-30, the signal from the microphone is too low and needs to be amplified before going into the soundcard. You need to get yourself a pre-amp for the mic to bring the level up to line-lvl then plug the pre-amp into where it says line-in on your card. That should take care of it. I agree that miking the amp is the way to go.

1) Turn down the output of the amp, or go through your mixer. ;)

2) Like NyMorningstar shared with you in the previous post, you will need to amplify the signal of the mic. You could use a pre-amp or go through your mixer.

Here's the hint for simple yet good...

Guitar --> ME-30 --> Amps --> Mic --> Mixer/Preamps --> Line input.

Set the amps output level to get your taste of character, not too high, nor too low. Adjust the gain/level in your mixer/preamps to get the average normal signal level needed to be recorded. (...about -10 db ). Keep monitoring your input level on Line input meter, before you record. Adjust the balance of tone clarity and signal level... experience and patience is needed here. Untill you get the vibe, catch it... :D Push the record button... :D

I believe you'll need Shure SM57 for miking guitar. That's the "must have". Hey... we can talk all day long about how to miking guitar anyway... Go to right column, Guitars & Basses...

I'm starting to see a pattern here... I need a mixer/pre-amp kind of thing... I only have a mixing table my dad uses fo films.. its's an Alecto PRO-37. Is it any good? I tried using it with the mic, still couldn't get a strong signal... any hints?
Thnx for your help!

Sorry, never heard that mixer before... but if it couldn't boost the mic signal, that way you'll need another mixer/preamps. Nowdays mixer always have mic input anyway. Even the cheapest. If you really want to get better quality, then you'll need better "musical" mixer (opposed to video things mixer). For now, I think you should be glad to use your sound card mic input. :D I've seen some beginners accept and pretty happy with the result. Want better sounds ? Try better equip. Try first, then send us your next complain here, we'll help you out... :)
