well I have a fostex 16 track recorder assorted mikes and a powered PA..I have a studio that my band records in and we want to get a rough live sound with the equipment we have...basic instruments I also have a powered mixer....

What I would like to do is line in the mics to pick up the guitars and drums (two overhead mics) my question is really how to hok up the PA to the 16 track...passive active...I just don't know...and I don't want to blow anything...
thanks fothe help

I have a Fostex VF160. This is what I do. 2 overhead condensers on the drum kit, 1 on kick, 1 on snare. Take a line in from each guitar and bass amp if you can, if not, close mic each. Don't bother with vocals(or guitar solos), just punch 'em in later. If you HAVE to get the vocals, get a line in from the PA or mic the PA speaker cabinet.

If you can get or borrow a headphone amp that would be ideal. You can then take the bass in direct (use a DI box) and eliminate bass bleed to the drum and guitar mics. I'd mic the guitars and drums directly into your hard disc recorder--bypass the PA altogether. As stated above, skip vocals and extra guitar parts you want to work on and overdub those after doing the main tracking. If you can't monitor with headphones then you'll need to run the bass amp and mic it as well; but you can play with positioning the mics on the drum kit and guitars to try and limit bleed. Also, if you can dedicate a couple extra mics to your drums (kick and snare) that would be good as well; or consider using a mono overhead. I'd definitely try and put a mic on the kick drum.
