I'm using an AKG C5 condenser mic, i just bought it at guitar center for $150 and it came with an AKG D5 dynamic FREE! which was good, and I also, already had an sm57 with a mic stand. So now I have two mic cables, one stand (for the sm57), and three mics. I wanna use the condenser because it's the best one I have, and my friend says he basically only uses a few condensers for recording himself and his band, and maybe some dynamics, but apparently, to get started and sound good he says i really only need the condenser. Anyways, the mic is running though a "Presonus Firestudio project" audio interface, which is pretty good, it has eight XLR/line inputs and outputs, and firewire, and midi inputs and stuff.. I bought it last year off of ebay. It seems like it has good preamps and all that jazz. And that's going into my 2008 white macbook which is using cubase. So I'm recording myself singing, but there's just a buzz that takes up like half of the track. WHAT DO I DO TO GET RID OF IT!? HOW DO I FIX MY SETUP AND TWEAK IT TO SOUND NICE? DO I MESS WITH the EQ on cubase, or the gain knobs on the interface, or do I have to use the mic a certain way to block out external noise. Me and my dad think the noise is coming from something, some kind of noise in the set up, could even be the computer. but I'm getting

What do you mean by "takes up half of the track"? Is it a stereo track with buzz on one side and the recording on the other? You should be recording to a mono track unless the source is stereo.

I mean, well, visually, the buzz shows up on the sound-wave, and appears to take up about half of the space, or a little less.. And sonically, it's pretty noticeable and annoying and I can hear that the mic is good and my vocals are good and coming through, but the buzz from the electronics is sort of screwing everything up. And no it's not stereo, it is mono.

Try recording without the power cable on the macbook.

Have you tested every mic and every channel to make sure it is a universal problem? Then try recording with no mic plugged in. Play with the gain on your pre-amps - I wouldn't put them past 75% max

- you need to isolate the issue

Keep trying things until you isolate the source of the noise.
Step 1. Try it with the Mac on battery power.
Step 2. Change the mic.
Step 3. Change the mic cable
Step 4. Change the input channel on the Presonus
Step 5. Try a different room

mjbphotos and everyone else thanks for the advice, I tried all that and still the buzz was showing up and I think it was from, the wall outlet, for one thing, as well as latency, and bitrate samples on cubase in comparion with the firestudio project audio interface. Today I bought a Furman PL-8 Series II power conditioner for $60 (MSRP $160) at guitar center and it has worked wonders for me with this problem. Pretty much all of the electronic noise has disappeared completely.

Well that's good cause I was going to suggest lifting the ground on your computer power cord. And everyone hates that.
