I'd be quite interested to hear some thoughts on this little drum mix I just did. I did it with the goal of trying to make the kit sound somewhat like it actually does in the room.

After I hear some of yall's thoughts I'll go into the details of the recording if anyone is interested.
Thanks!

Nice job, overall...

drums are the hardest for me to capture, and the mix here is just about right. A couple of things I notice that maybe don't matter to someone else, though.

I like the bass drum up front in the mix, like it is here. I like to feel the "thump" right in the chest. But I think you should pull the kick drum mic out of the drum a bit, I am hearing a dead, hollow ring like my head was inside the drum. Maybe a gate on that mic would help?

The other thing is the overhead seems a bit bright for your cymbal selection. Just a tad. And these things don't mean it's not a usable setup, it is!

The levels are a little low on the mp3. What are you recording with?

If you're looking for a room sound or what you're actually hearing yourself, the best way is to set up room mics where you are standing.

This sounds like a real drum kit... which means it sounds like crap.

What's with the cavernously thin reverb?

The cymbals are way too distant and thin sounding. Did you run a high pass filter on them or what???

It just sounds weak. Keep at it.

Sounds like your overheads are way to high up. Spend some time getting the overheads right alone before even checking the other mics. What you want is to capture the snare so you want your overheads behind the drummer pointing towards the snare equidistant. Not to close to the cymbals but maybe around 8 -12 inches above them or so.
