Trumpet mic

Any sugestions on a good trumpet mic, dont have to much money about 150 for it

Audix F15 works great on trumpet and sax. One of the best sax mics I've heard.

i just recorded tumbone, sax, and a few trumpets for the first time. i used a 57.

sm57 can do no wrong.

I don't know what these go for used, cause I know new they're over your budget, but check out the Oktava ML52. It's the only application I keep this mic, but it's really good at it - to my ears at least.

SM57 or find a used Sennheiser md421 if you could bump up your budget about $50 or so.

The best sound you can get on trumpets will come from a decent ribbon mic.

The MD421 is pretty hot sounding, the 421 MKII a little hotter than the MKI.

The MD441 is absolutely great on trumpets and bones, as well on saxophone.

The SM57 is decent, the SM7 a whole lot better.

Some LDC's can sound quite good on trumpet, like the MXL V77, the SP B1 is not nice on trumpet (IMHO that is).

The Beyer M201 is quite good on trumpets too, the M69 and M88 much too bright.

But if you want a warm and fat trumpet sound: ribbon.

yes, a ribbon mic is the shit. And it doesn't have to be too expensive either. I use a Beyer m260 on trumpet myself, and it works like a dream most of the time.
Should be well within your budget if bought used.

The Beyer M260 was designed as a handheld mic for speech, it will get damaged when you blow hard into it. Indeed the M260 is a great horn mic.

The M160 was designed as an instrument mic, awesome microphone.

The M500 was designed as a vocal mic, awesome on horns too.

You should be careful with any ribbon mic though.

There's a chance you could damage a ribbon mic. There's also a chance you'll get hit by lightning today.

The velocity of the air coming out the end of a trumpet is so low it probably wouldn't put out a candle. And - who puts a microphone right into the bell of a trumpet anyway?

Ribbons ARE great on trumpets. That said, Miles Davis sounded great through a U47!
