Triple C compressor with Firepod

the pigeon knows the way.
I need help.. I've never used a hardware compressor before.

It's used on tracks already recorded, right? Or do you use it AS you're recording?

How do I hook this up with a Firepod? Go from an output on the Firepod to the input on the compressor, then out from the compressor back to the Firepod? (I'm using firewire on the Firepod)

You can use it for either, although it's generally accepted as a good idea to use it primarily after tracking. For vocals, a little bit of compression on the way in tends to smooth things out a bit, but if you're recording at 24-bit, there's enough information there that you really don't need to compress much at all on the way in.

Yep!

Yep!

Hey guys! I got here late, but this is the same question I was about to ask, so I'm glad someone else had already asked it.

From the compressor, I go back into what on the Firepod? Into another of the 8 channels on the front, or one of those inputs on the back?

Late? This party was over when you were in diapers man! Hah, well not quite, but it's good that you're searching instead of just posting the same question. That's one step further than most new guys get.

Anyway, on to your question. If you're trying to use the compressor after tracking, I believe you can use whatever input you like. To keep things clean, I'd use one of the line outputs in the back, into one of the line inputs in the back. If you need more than two channels, you'll have to use one of the front inputs, but if you've got that much outboard gear, it might be a good idea to get some other solution with more ins/outs possibly.

Thanks...I was actually trying to figure out, though, how to connect the compressor in-line, so I'm recording vocals with some compression. Does the FirePod not allow for that kind of O/I routing? Do I need to hit the compressor before the FirePod? Is there enough signal to even compress before preamping. And if I'm recording 24-bit (I use Logic) do I even NEED to compress in-line? (Another post I reads suggested that at 24 bit, it's ok to use Logic's compression after tracking.

THANKS for the help! I appreciate it!

3-C is a digital comp. Would it be worth it to go in spdif to skip the extra conversion trip?

Still compressor shopping

Actually, I haven't even bought a compressor yet... Still looking... I didn't even know there WAS such a thing a a digital comp - I was just going to buy a decent analog rack unit that I had planned to then run in line with the FirePod to compress vocals (basses, etc) before going to the DAW. But it appears that the FirePod doesn't have a loop, right?
