Tried the Plate 140

Last night I activated the Plate 140 demo and felt very impressed. I spent some time trying to duplicate it with some existing plugs...Realverb Pro, Waves Ren Reverb, Sonitus and some odds and ends, but couldn't.
Of course, it's possible to get a good sound out of the others, but the Plate 140 just seemed more "right", for lack of a better term.
On a piece with just acoustic guitar and vocal the Plate 140 made it easier to imagine the performance taking place in an actual room. The others sounding more like a reverb pasted onto the top of the performance.
Also, the reverb tails seem smoother and creamier.
Looks like it's time to go ahead and buy the the Plate 140. It's a great matchup with Sonar 4PE!

Your previous posts about the UAD card made me too damn jealous, so I went and grabbed one on Friday... Just the Studio Pack... Wow! I'm happy, even if my live in auditor is not... :)

Now you are telling me I need to hide another $US150?

I recently got the Waves' IR-1 Parametric Convolution Reverb and I can't beleive how crappy my other reverbs were...problem is its a memory hog. Have you tried the Convulution reverb to make a comparison against Plate 140? If so I would be interested in what you thought.

Apologies for getting you in trouble with your live-in auditor, but yes, you need it! Here's my trick...my wife sings, so I just used the demo to make her voice sound fantastic. Before she got to hear it I gave her an enthusiastic sales pitch of why the Plate140 was so wonderful. After listening to the track her response was, "Yes, we need that." A done deal!
Btw, congrats on getting the UAD-1...don't you deserve it?!?!?!?!

I haven't tried the Waves' IR-1 Parametric Convolution Reverb, but have been playing around with SIR. SIR definitely sounds great and with the right impulse it does some very nice reverbs. But the Plate140 just seemed to give a little more realistic impression of a good sounding small room...which is what I typically go for. That's not to say that it would always be that way, but for this test it was. Of course, it would depend on the quality of the impulses used.
If I didn't have the Plate140, and judging by the quality you can get with SIR, it might be tempting to consider the Waves' IR-1. It's more adjustable than SIR, will have continued support, and seems to be highly regarded by pros and hobbyists alike. Maybe it can match the Plate 140...with the proper impulses?
Since you have the IR-1, have you played around with the Voxengo impulse modeler? That looks interesting...you can visually create room sizes, shapes, and put in barriers within the room to tweak reflections. That might be an interesting way to make your own custom impulses.
Btw, how much of a cpu hit does the IR-1 take?

Wow. I went and checked that card out. It costs more than my computer! :eek: How does the Pultec sound??? And the LA2A???

Hey guys, I'm, in Kirkland.

I've been trying to order the UAD-1 from Sweetwater, my rep hasn't called me back yet. I guess I'll be getting the plate and the Precision EQ as well.

Whaddya play??? I play acoustic guitar mostly, but mess around with all kinds of stringed stuff.

I am using an old Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 @ 24bit/44.1kHz.

There is no such thing as a magic bullet, but the Pultec and the LA-2A are both pretty damn close. I nearly fell out of my chair... Even Ms. Wooden Ears was impressed!

I stopped looking for reverbs after I heard the 140 Plate. It rivals some of my external gear. Get it, use it, move along to some other aspect of your sound.

That's funny. Yeah, I am about done. I just finished the acoustic treatment for my room.

Next up is a couple of top end preamps then a high end mic.
Oh,also going for a the m-audio midi trigger findger and then the Frontier Tranzport. Then I will be done. Oh except for the Precision Limiter and Preceision EQ on my UAD 1. It never ends.

I may go public in the future but for now the home front is almost done.

I just downloaded the 3.8 software and will give the plate a try!

If I like it I will not only be down the price of the plug,but will probably start thinking about another card. :o :rolleyes: :eek:

Acidrock will not be pleased with that new nickname.

What size is your room and what kind of treatment did you do to it?
 
Room is 10x11. Auralex 2x4 panels at the first point of contact, left, right and ceiling. Tube bass traps in the corners behind the speakers - 12 inch cement tubes, 4 foot long covered with a medium coarse teal colored material. One end is sealed with a plywood plug. The other end is open.

I have rigid 703 fiberglass 2x4 feet and 4inches thick, two panels in each back corner. Then I have a book case, which is full, right behind me on the back wall which is my diffuser. :o

I scoped the room at various frequencies and have a null at 85-90 Hz but very smooth below and above this point.

As soon as I upgrade my front end, I am done, except for the toys mentioned above.
