Tricky question.

What's the difference between orange? lol sounds like you're having an argument with someone over this. That's too subjective - everyone has their own opinion and there is no right answer. They are as important as you want them to be. :D

depends, what's more important? The message or the music? More than likely though lyrics and melody go hand in hand, atleast in a lot of pop and r&b music

I hate questions like this. Would that Rebecca Black girl's song "Friday" be a hit if there wasn't crappy lyrics? Would "A Day In The Life" be one of the greatest tunes of all time if it only had good lyrics? They're both important.

Damn dood! Now I got that 'Friday' tune stuck in my head again. Arggggggghhhh! Neg rep for you sir! lol!

Friday, Friday, upsetting everyone on Friday! lol! Gotta go eat cereal now.........

to me, it's melody. I remember alot more melodies than lyrics.

Melody for me seams like how one would identify a song. I hear it all of the time - "you know the song goes like "♫♪ hmm-m-m-m-m-m-m-m---m ♪♫♪".
But then again a good play on words identify a song as well.

Tricky question. What is more important, Lyrics or Melody?

What's more important in the creation of a human being ? The sperm or the egg ? What's more important to the upbringing of a child ? The mum or the dad ?
The question is moot because not every song has lyrics. And even in a song with lyrics, what about the instrumental breaks and solos ? :p
In the West, we have an absolute monomania about individualism which often shows itself {unwittingly} in these kinds of questions in which something that can only exist as a whole is broken down into it's constituent parts in an attempt to determine which is the most important element.
Maybe I should save this for the political forum ! :D

hehe It really is a tricky one isn't it!

I would agree melody comes first, that is what draws your ears in to a tune. There are lots of songs on the radio that I don't know the lyrics to but can still sing the tune. I guess if you can then put great lyrics to it then its going to be killer!

Not really a tricky question at all. A crap lyric with a great melody can always sell. A great lyric with a crap melody...maybe, but it's going to be a lot harder of a sale and will never sell as well.

A great song can exist without a lyric at all.

I think most people have their heads around this well, and some of the responses were awesome! In the end, it is always a personal preference of those creating the music that will establish their opinions. I love content rich lyrics, and the guys I play with just want to make the women dance - ideally, we get to have it all.

I would have to say it is a good combination of both. Although some can pull off good melody and bad lyrics i.e a lot of radio rap, and others the good lyrics and bad melody. But the best artist can blend them both.

In today's world... the question should be more like: What's more important, melody, lyrics, vocal talent, grooves, dance moves, looks, style... Beyonce has great melodies, lyrics that speaks to everybody, vocal talent, groovy songs, great moves, looks awesome, she sings in a wide array of styles.

I think both are very important. If I had to choose, I would go with melody because a song with great lyrics won't catch on with most people if the melody is not good. A song with great melody but horrible lyrics can make it.. sometimes. Oftentimes, I have trouble deciphering the lyrics in most songs anyway. I tend to just listen and groove to the music.
