i made a very good beat yesterday, and i thought it sound very trendy, it has a lot of potential you know... But it made me think: any of you ever wrote a very good beat, but trashed it because it was too unoriginal? i mean... the beat in itself is not a copy of anything that's out, but still it's just... too trendy?

I've felt that way before...but most people are also their own worst critics. I'll usually show it to a friend before I trash it to get another opinion...

i do that all the time.

i have this friend who uses a lot of loop CDs for his beats and i cant stand that shit. well, actually when i first hear them i think, "wow, that sounds pretty pro. wait a minute, actually it sounds pro in a sort of boring way".

if i ever catch a whif of that flavor in my beats i trash them.

I've made a handful of beats that my intention was to re-create the sound of someone who's been doing it for $. I personally wouldn't use them, but I never throw anything away that has potential. I put that joint on a cd and every underground emcee wants to use it. I make some beats for the masses, and I make some for myself as well.
I think it would pay off in the long run to be able to do both. Like, Rodney Jerkins originally came off sounding like a fake Timbo to me until he found his staccato-string niche. I try to learn from the masters, even copy them to figure them out, and then mold my own sound to my liking. I don't consider it riding someone's jock, like some people see it. I'm not going to meet dre or primo any time soon, so I can only learn by listening.
I would expect everyone on this board takes a lil from somebody, and that's ok. You can have a local hit that may sound like something a hot producer did, and that only shows your versatility.
IMHO, chameleons are dope.

well--- it's really like the arabic sounds trend that's been going on for a while. the music and drum pattern aren't copied at all, not sampled. all made by me, but i'm really not making anything new, in my own opinion that is.

but i guess it's not your business to start trends when you're not well known. i got a few good ideas for new things, but i don't think there would be anything wrong with getting known by following the trends at the beginning. didn't use to think so, but starts to feel like the easiest way to bring something new after that.

that's the beauty of it , we get to select what makes the cut :D
