Hmmm ... Maybe I'm just to old. Punk to me was the Ramones!

even the ramones seem like pop music to me. i mean "blitzgrieg bop" or whatever is poppy shit, and all over mtv etc. punk can be pop, rock can be pop, country can be pop, hiphop can be pop, anything can be "pop". the line is blurred but in alot of cases, especially with newer "punk" bands, i think punk is just a word to describe pop music played by "kwel" people that dont want to be referred to as pop. it also makes "kwel" people feel "kewler" about listening to them if its referred to as "punk" instead of "pop"

it has to do with people trying too hard to be "punk" or something they arent, or caring too much about what people think, instead of just liking what they like. a good example of this might be ashley simpson, she says how she wants to be soo different from jessica, how she's not pop, how shes punk, she wears the chuck taylors and the black cut off capris, she's h-core! yeh, listen to her music, see her luxurious pampered lifestyle...quite the punk i must say.

another example is this girl i saw on vh1's the surreal life one time...shes a singer and was asked to sing a pop song, and she actually cried because she's too cool and "she doesnt sing pop songs" ... i mean come on... why do some people care so much? if it's good music its good music. then there's metalcore, grindcore, posthardcore, thrash, screamo, anythingcore, all of these genres and sub genres are a bit ridiculous...it's all music.

I'm too old I guess, are the Sex Pistols 'punk' by today's punk standards?

Those guys were neither fast or that talented, just a lot of 'fuck you' attitude and pretty decent songs.

Other way around! That WAS/IS punk!!!!

The stuff that is called "punk" today is clueless as to what punk really is! Today's "punk" is a commercialized, homogenized, vegetarian bastardized version of what was happening in the 70s/80s.

The whole idea of punk was that you were not really a musician, just could play enough to write a song. There was NO emphasis on technique or ability because there was no technique or ability!!!

I'd bet you if any of todays "punk" bands were admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they'd show up wearing suits and ties. The Sex Pistols just said: "What??!!... We ain't going!!!! ...F**k you!!"

They just don't get it today!!! Thanks MTV! Thanks Clearchannel!!

Why? Because you're talking about people who still think that high school is the pinnacle of their existance! They are convinced they don't have a meaning or individuality unless they are defined by the peer groups they had in school!

This is what makes popular culture so pathetic!

Almost two years since this thread started, and Travis Barker still sucks.

ah true, and what's even worse these days are the emo kids. they are way too depressed. they should stop crying and enjoy life a little more. oh no their girlfriend dumped them. people have it so much worse than them in life. i mean..poor people in africa have aids and no parents and live in dirty streets without clothes or food...but do you see africans running around in eyeliner and cutting their wrists?

and then there are the fake emo-ers ..which are even worse... they pretend to be emo because it's just a big trend.

I have see/heard stories of them slitting the top layer of their skin open, so as it looks raw, so as to get money from tourists, if that helps :)

and my dick is bigger than yours.

if you dont like travis then dont. if you want to sit in your room and reminisce about what was REAL punk "back in the day" then you need to get out more. i believe thats called "growing up"

this entire thread shows how sad some people are

That's funny, cause the real punk "back in the day" WAS punk, and what is called "punk" today is not! If you believe it is, then you need to get out of your bedroom more and "grow up", because you are living a lie and you have no clue.

And put down the magnifying glass. That's just a pubic hair and wishful thinking!

And the sad people are somehow called "Emo"....whatever!

I honestly think Barker is OK at what he does. He's a cut above the rest of the pop punk drummers. I, however, dislike his lifestyle and view on things. He's basically a turd in my eyes. ;)

wow, there is a punk non-punk battle going on everywhere you go. I say who cares, if you like it good, if not who cares, wow this thread is old but i just wanted to say for good "punk drumming" check out Leftover Crack's fuck world trade album, you won't regret it at all, the musicianship is excellent, the lyrics are top notch and in the true spirit of punk music, and they are squatters so all you fuckwad's that are so worried about "credibility" can enjoy it as well really good mix of many styles of music here, for sure check it out.

Travis Barker is an awesome drummer, allthough it seems like people think that without him blink wouldnt be good , well i beg to differ, there songs are awesome, it doesnt matter that they are mostly powerchords, what sounds good sounds good.IMO

travis is pretty good at being creative where the rest of the music is pretty basic. i've heard way more creative stuff tho from drummers of like dillinger escape plan or converge. dillinger's drummer is friggin awesome.

Well, I've shot about 14 rounds into this thread and it still won't die!

Guess we should rename this the "Zombie" thread! Watch you brains! They're coming after them! :D
