So how's it going with"3"?
Have you heard a difference in the sound quality?
Have you checked out the Pantheon reverb?
Yes I hear a difference in sound quality. However, I am not sure I agree with the prevailing opinion that it sounds "better." It definately sounds "different." Whether that difference will translate into better mixes still remains to be seen, as I don't have enough hours logged and haven't done any mixdowns yet.

Yes I'ver also checked out the Pantheon reverb. So far I'm unimpressed. It may find a use in my arsenal, but probably no more than the Anwida reverb I have that was free. I'm pretty much locked into the Waves Truverb and RVerb for most of my needs. I occasionally use Cakewalk's FxReverb, but only when I need to automate a parameter. (Come to think of it, is the Pantheon automatable?)

As I've said previously, I bought S3 for the Bus flexibility, and I am pretty much pleased with that. The fact that I got a VST adapter was a nice added bonus.

I kinda also like the new look, however, it does eat up a lot of screen real estate. Haven't yet figured out whether I have any need for the "highlighted" track channel strip that appears to the Left in Track View. I know I can hide it, but so far I'm leaving it there to see if I can actually use it for anything meaningful.

Same thing with the vertical meters. Nice to have a choice, but vertical just chews up too much space for my taste. Particularly using two monitors, I have a lot of horizontal room now, but no extra vertical room. Hmmm... maybe I should stack the monitors. :)

I thought I should be able to hide it too but for the life of me haven't been able to find how. I've right-clicked on everything over there I think. How the hell do you hide this?

Thanks!

Upper left hand corner, right above the track pane, below the tool bars, there will be a small icon next to the select icon.LEFT click over it.

Just don't reverse the order, your music will play backwards.

I must say,"3"has'nt been a significant upgrade for me.I like the midi clips and vst adaptor. My projects are so simple I have no need for afdvanced routing. Then again I could probably get by with home studio...naaahh! :p

Oh,you can also use "I" your keyboard as a shortcut to open close the track inspector view.

Yaah, and then everyone will hear the satanic death chants I have hidden in our music.

In fact, we did the Paul is Dead thing long before the Beatles ever did. :)

Thanks for the tip, acidrock! I guess I should probably break down and make my way through the Sonar3 user guide, but it's just so close to Sonar 2 (and I read that user guide cover to cover) that I figured I could just feel my way around. I never would have found that track inspector (didn't even know that's what that little side panel was called) icon though. Now that you pointed it out, it just jumps off the screen at me though! Doh!

Anyway, thanks again. :)

LOL,that's exactly the way I've approached "3".

1. Why don't the Hardware Mains show up in Track View?

Well, I just noticed something else. There is no way to patch an effect onto a Hardware (physical) Main Out. Therefore it does not appear that Cakewalk intended them to be used as a Master Out.

Also, in the normal templates, there is a Virtual Bus set up and labeled as Master.

It's still not clear to me why Cakewalk has a channel strip in Console View for the H/W outs. It doesn't seem to serve any purpose that the Virtual Master wouldn't also serve. All they do is provide a meter for the hardware, which should read exactly the same as your Virtual Master.

Am I still missing something here?

Anyway, it appears I can still work completely in Track View and still don't need Console View.

Bimp!:D

This thread (and the other curent one) have been helping me get up to speed on S3.
I now (though it's still early for me) see your point. What are the H/W subs for and what do they do that the masters do not?

On a side note, I went back S2 and noticed way down at the bottom of the bus pane in track view are the 'Aux master' sub-busses just like in S3. Never even noticed them before.

The H/W Main, think of it as your Monitor speaker volume fader.

The Master buss sub is generally used for any last minute plug-ins like compressors or EQ i.e. mastering tactics. I also use it as the pre hardware (soundcard) summing buss which is pointed to from any effects or buss summing compressors i.e. a drum submix or background vocal submix.

It's a good idea to keep them separate because you might want to drive a master buss compressor hard with high volume but not have your ears ripped off from the sound coming out of your speakers. By keeping them separate you have control of driving your effects but monitoring at a lower volume.

I'll have to check to see if the H/W fader is in fact as second gain control after the 'Master' that feeds it. But so far it still seems redundant (external play-back control aside).
They would have made perfect sense in S2 where you were forced to have 'sub-mixes' ending up on a single H/W out, but had no summed meter for it.
I still have some work to do. :D
