How come if I record drum machine on 1 & 2 and lock them in time and then come along and record a bass on 3 and a guitar on 4 and play them back they don't sync up together ??
Yea I'm stupid but keep that in mind.....
bubba......

sounds like latency. Do a search here for that and you'll learn all about it.

Had the same problem a while back. I ended up setting the Options/Multitrack/Play-Reocrd Correct For Drift/Sycn checkboxes to on.

This has cured any out of sync probs.

I've been having the same problem, in addition to clicks and pops. I have and AMD Athlon 1 Gig with 512 of RAM, and I'm using a Delta 44 sound card. I've optimized the thing exactly the way everyone has told me to. Any ideas? Anyone?

Thanks.

search undrer my name musko for lots of tips.
if you get problems its probably either dma isnt enabled on your hard drive or you have something else in another pci slot holding up the 44 from doing its thing. list what you have in your pci slots.
note....fancy gamer and tv tuner cards can wreak havoc to a daw as some hog the pci bus so audio cant do its thing (ie locks out audio !!)

Thanks from a fellow Canuck. I'll check the PCI slots list when I get home, although I don't think there are any conflicts.

musko . so i can help you please get diskbench from prorec.com and run it on your drives and post the reported statistics like tracks, transfer rates etc.
also download what i use the demo of powertracks(cdn programmers) from pgmusic.com and tell me if it runs fine and your clicks and pops disappear.
its been known to run (with respect) on some pretty poorly set up systems.
if it doesnt run on yours then that will tell me we have some diagnosing to do on your system.
also up in the menus is a test for how many tracks your system can do.
tell me if it reports over 40 tracks could you ? thanks.

Thanks again--will do, when I get home. I'm thinking that I may have 2 sticks of incompatible (133 & 100) 256 RAM in my system. Would that do it?

Anyway, I'll run those programs and see what happens, and I'll forward my system summary as well.

Holy crap, you are a LIFE SAVER. Seriously, I record ALL the time, and I just recently got a Creative Labs Audigy 2 NX sound card and was having huge problems with latency... but since I had those two things checked off it fixed it! Who knew something would actually work for me for a change ;) Thanks.

Okay Manning--I'm going to give you everything I can think of re: system info:

First, thanks for Diskbench. Here's what it said:

TIMER CHECK=1001 (1000)
CPU CHECK = 49.96 (50)
CPU INDEX (RELATIVE TO PRO 200 MHZ)=6.926124

OPEN= 0 MS
WRITE= 10746/23.82 MB/CPU=0.99
FLUSH (can't read my own writing?)=30ms/100
REWIND=0MS
READ=10695/23.94MB/CPU=1.07

BLOCK
131072/MB=10.91/TRACK=129.76/CPU=0.53
65536/MB=6.22/TRACK=73.91/CPU=0.47
32768/MB=3.16/TRACK=37.59/CPU=0.44
16384/MB=1.59/TRACK=18.95/CPU=0.44
8192/MB=1.86/TRACK=22.06/CPU=0.89

I'm guessing this has something to do with how many tracks I can record, and since the 32768 number matches the cache number I was instructed to insert in the system.ini file, that's the one that's relevant. I dunno...

Also, I downloaded Pro Tracks, and it wouldn't even let me set my input device to the Delta 44. I was able to set it as my output device, and when I did this, I was getting random static noises through my speakers. Not only that, but the virtual piano sound was distorted and crackly. ??

Here is some more info I was able to cull about my sytem config.:

I think I'm now getting crackles on playback of some tracks that I thought were clean previously. I'm thinking now it could be anything from the fact that my big-ass 17"monitor is sitting on my cpu, or that I somehow screwed the sound card or the additional stick of 256 RAM when I installed it (although I took all non-static precautions for both), or that the 2 sticks of RAM are conflicting speeds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Manning.

dm

Also Manning, in Pro Tracks, I'm apparently able to record 48 tracks.

Thanks

musko diskbench shows respectable disc transfer numbers.
and cpu.
this is good. do you have any flags showing in control panel device mgr ?
question - do you have any other devices in your pci slots other than
the delta 44 ? looks to me like maybe you have ? modem ? i dont have great eyesite and find that large irq print difficult for me.. need confirmation. yes the ram could be an issue.
also - i'm confused. you mentioned you tried pro tracks.
this is not the right product. unless you meant powertracks.
installation should be a breeze as told to me by another HR bbser the other day as well for me it was a breeze and thousands of others.
are you sure that you installed powertracks and not some other product ?
if you did and it didnt run this could mean you have some serious issues.
did you run the sound card profiling ? and for starters set to 16 bit 44.1 ?
in preferences ? did you click the button that says move selected devices to top (ie; drivers to use). in powertracks it displays your input and output drivers. please tell me what the driver names are displayed in both boxes.
also up in the menus is the track test. after installing powertracks
did you see the main screen displayed ok with the tracks ?
try doing the track test once the main screen displays (forget the virtual piano stuff for now. there are other things to get right with your system.)

Sorry Manning--I meant Powertracks (I guess it's Powertracks Pro Audio). Anyway, it loaded no problem, and 48 tracks come up. But I could not record analog audio because it wouldn't let me move anything to the top in input devices (i.e., I could not select the Delta 44 as an input device). The self-test says i can record 48 tracks at 44.1. Anyway, here is the list of drivers:

INPUT
MICROSOFT SOUND MAPPER
MODEM #0 LINE RECORD
MODEM #1 LINE RECORD
C-MEDIA WAVE
DELTA 44 MULTITRACK
DELTA 44 1/2
DELTA 44 3/4
DELTA 44 MONITOR MIXER

OUTPUT
MICROSOFT SOUND MAPPER
MODEM #0 LINE RECORD
MODEM #1 LINE RECORD
C-MEDIA WAVE
DELTA 44 MULTITRACK
DELTA 44 1/2
DELTA 44 3/4

Also, there is a flag in my device manager, way down, beside (and I'm not at my computre right now), I think, PCI sound device. But it tells me the Delta 44 is working properly.

I'm about ready to throw this thing out the window, or at least pull out the Fostex R8 reel-to-reel.

Thanks again,
dm

ok - so your system is plenty powerfull.
bear with me as i test some things. if i cant get it working. pg tech support definitely will. SO DONT GET FLUSTERED !
lots of users using delta with powertracks.
if you couldnt select delta as the input device.
it could mean an issue in the delta. you might have to reinstall it in a different pci slot for example. did you install delta yourself ? please check in win device manager SPECIFICALLY if there is a "flag" against the 44 and get back to me.
in powertracks select cmedia wave input and output.
tell me if powertracks accepts the drivers.
then under track type (ty) you will see a midi plug. click it. and it turns to mono audio recording. click again for stereo.
try audio recording 3 mono tracks for 20 seconds.. tell me if you get latency this way. just record a drum machine output. then play a guitar with it.
does this work OK ?
now in windows tell me what you have as your default sound card selected in control panel (is it the cmedia or the delta 44 ?? i need the answer.)
if its the cmedia. try selecting delta.
by the way when selecting delta input and output drivers . HOW DID YOU DO IT ?
did you try using the shift key and hiliting DELTA 44 1/2
and DELTA 44 3/4 AT ONCE. on input and output ?
thanks....and dont throw the pc out.
i would suggest you also email pg tech support. they are extremely helpfull people to me in the past when i first set up.
at this point i would suspect one (or more) the following.....
1. you might have another device interfering with the pci bus eG..maybe the modem or another device.
2. you might have to get a tech to disable the cmedia in the bios.
3. the 44 might have to be moved to a different pci slot.
if it has flags against it it means it was not properly installed.
bear with me an get back to me.

musko. this is DIRECT from powertracks tech support faq that i found for users with delta sound cards. you might find it usefull...quote...

"In the Delta 44 or Delta 66 control software go into the M Audio Delta Control Panel | MultiTrack Driver Devices. Click on "Independent." This should now allow you to record 4 tracks at once. In PowerTracks Pro Audio, go to the Options Menu | Preferences | Audio | Drivers, and select the Delta 44/66 drivers."

hope this helps musko. tell me if it works and peace.
maybe you already tried this ?

Hey thanks, Manning. I'll try switching it to independent, but I think I have other problems...

As for Powertracks, I was still not able to change the input driver. It wants to stay put at sound mapper. I can change output, and did so to Delta 1/2. Oddly, I was still able to record while set to sound mapper (?). I did record 3 tracks for 20 seconds--no latency. BUT, I still got pops and clicks! There is no flag by the Delta or by any of the audio devices, although there is one by a GAME PORT in the device manager.

To reitierate an earlier post, here are the conflicts on my system:

IRQ 3 VIA USB Iniversal Host Controller
IRQ 3 VIA USB Iniversal Host Controller
IRQ 3 CM18738/C3DXPCI Audio Device

The Delta is set as my default record and playback card in windows [by the way, what's the difference between setting the Delta to multitrack or to the numbered pairs of ins/outs?].

Thoughts?

musko. sorry for late getting back to you.
wifey and i were out having a shopping spree.
you still didnt tell me if you had dma enabled on your hard drive.
also did you get rid of the memory problem ? using the same memory now ?
i REALLY THINK you need to have a pc tech check your system. because your getting pops problems on both cool and powertracks.
your pc itself is a vgood one. but is dma enabled on your HD
here is how you check dma is enabled.....control panel>>>system>>>device manager>>>hilite disk drive and click the properties button.
you should see a check mark against the dma box if dma is enabled.
also - could you tell me a little about your system ?
did someone else use it before you ? or did you buy it brand new ?
i'm just wondering because somehow somethings got screwed up.
also heres something I WOULD DEFINITELY TRY.
BUT DONT DO IT IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW ! get a pc tech to do it.
1. uninstall all devices in the pci slots .
2. put the delta sound card in a pci slot BY ITSELF with no other devices installed in the pci slots.
3. now try recording. if no clicks and pops. great.
now reintroduce/install ONE BY ONE each other pci device previously installed untill the clicks and pops appear. when the clicks and pops appear THAT IS THE OFFENDING DEVICE THAT IS CAUSING PROBLEMS.
let me explain. if you have other devices in the pci slots as well as the delta , they can make demands on the pci bus and "interrupt"
the delta from gettin access to the pci bus. these interruptions
show up as "pops" etc which is logical if you think about it.
my suspicion at this point is IF DMA IS ENABLED AND IF YOU PUT IN PROPER SAME MEMORY, that it is pci bus contention that is probably causing you the problems.
please get back to me if dma is enabled etc
peace.

Hey Manning,

Yes--I enabled DMA after reading some very good stuff on the Tascam & M-Audio sites. Did that long ago. Still no go.

So you think I should stick with this system? I bought it new about 3 years ago, and it's been great until I installed the Delta. I did have a "PC tech" set it up for me, but the guy is a clown (even though he was recommended to me as someone who knows how to set up audio systems). He obviously messed up the set up, and he also persuaded me to buy an expensive (yet swell looking) ivory "ultra quiet" desktop case, since I complained that the Athlone was loud. I had built a pine box (ventilated) to house it, and that was perfect, but he talked me into this $200 case. Bad call--still loud, even with a quieter fan. And he wouldn't take the case back because I threw out the cardboard box! If you live anywhere near Ottawa, don't give Game Power your business.

So, I'll go somewhere else and have them look at it.

Thanks, Manning.

musko - i just helped another member on the bbs debug his system.
read the arch-jedi thread.
it turned out once i got him to disable his network card the problems stopped. my feeling is at this point is , but i'm not sure - that you might have something else affecting your sound card. ie...another device in another pci slot. so - when you visit the tech...try the delta in its own slot
WITH NO OTHER DEVICES INSTALLED IN PCI SLOTS. and see if everything is kosher. its interesting you got no latency using powertracks that i use,
and given the fact that dma is enabled leads me to suspect another pci device is interfering with the delta. but its difficult as i'm not there checking your system.
good luck and best of luck.
