Tracking drums with the mics we have...

Not sure if this needs to be posted in the drum forum or not, if so let me know. Just figured since my question is actually regarding the mics themselves, I'd post here.

Soon to start tracking our drummer. Acoustic drums, double kick.

Mics: EV N/D 257A (x1), EV N/D 457 (x1), AKG D1000E (x1), DIY subkick mics (x2), RODE NT-1 (x2)

What I'd like to do is place a mic inside of each Bass drum paired with a subkick mic on eack kick. Mic the snare. Two overheads.

Originally I wanted to use the NT1's for overheads, but given the limited cheap mics left would it be better to use the NT1's for mic'ing the kicks and use the EV's for the overheads?

Or would the EV's be OK for placing inside the Kick drums? (Keep in mind eack kick will also have a subkick mic)

I know the easy solution is "... just buy this mic", or "... buy this drum mic kit".
That'll come later ("one day").

My question is "how to use what we have in the best way?"

If someone asked you to record this drum set, and handed you these mics and you were force to "make it work"... how would you do it?

I like the idea of using the EV coupled with the subkick thingies - you'll be able to blend the attack from the EV with the low end from the others. Try the NT1's as overheads and if you can eq out some of the high end, they might be fine.

by using different mic's, I think you will be unsatisfied with the 2 kicks sounding different. You either need to mic them exactly the same, or just use one kick drum and use a double pedal. This will also free up mics to use elsewhere on the kit.
