tracking - cans vs monitors

How much better is it to use headphones than monitors when laying down vocal tracks? I know the mic is picking up sound from the monitors, is this always bad? It seems to almost be like reverb on playback.
 
cans for recording anything with microphones...will insure that you get a nice clean take free of any residual noise....if you want reverb on it, process it with reverb, but with a clean track, you have the option of doing it either way...if you decide you rather a clean vocal and you recorded that funky reverb, the track is garbage.....
 
Otherwise, build an isolation booth and avoid feedback with your monitors altogether.

If you are isolated in the booth, how do you hear the playback?
 
You have someone outside the booth wear some cans and lip-sync the tune. You simply watch their lips to gauge song position.

Alternatively, this could also be done with hand signals. Or maybe cue cards with a buxom blonde pointing to the words.
 
You might try two people lip syncing at the same time and seperate them on the mix.Start one about 10mls behind the other with a little delay on one for a nice full..."sound?"
