Track level in the headphones - need more?

Recording vocals (or anything really) in Cubase.

I've got a Condenser mic direct in to an EMU-0404 (external soundcard) , recording a single mono track.

Does anybody have the issue where you want to hear more level (your own mic) in the mix but can't use the fader to mix any more in? I thought I'd put it out there and see what everybody else is doing.

To get around this, I've been using the direct ouput from my EMU 0404 to monitor myself and just turning down the master in the DAW.
You get all the raw track volume you need, but with this method you *don't* get the benefit of having any effects on the vocals; it's dry having not been through Cubase..

So to get some more vocal level, with effects, back into my headphones when recording, I've been pulling *all* the sliders down for all other tracks, except the vocal track being recorded (of course). This method works with no problems, but depending on how many sliders there are, it's a pain to execute and also a problem to return the same mix that was there before.

Can anyone comment on this?

If that is the case, you probably have everything else recorded too hot and/or mixed too loud.


As far as what to do about the stuff you have already recorded, creat a group channel and route everything except the vocals to it. Then just turn that group fader down. To get the exact level of the mix back, put the group fader back to 0.
