TR outs to TRS Ins

Dumb question, but if I were to run the unbalanced outs from the inserts on a mixer into the balanced lines in on a recorder (using 1/4 TRS cables), how would this effect the sound? The line length woul be less than 3 ft.

I think you'd want to use unbalanced cables for that kind of patch. But it should have no effect on the sound.
 
most recorders will say they are balanced INs but in the specs you'll see they also accept unbalanced. Like Mad said, no change in signal though.
 
You might lose a little bit of level (6db typically) going from unbalanced into a balanced input, depending on the individual equipment. Should be no signal degradation though.
 
I dont know if you know this already but the way I heard it is to insert the TS cable in to the insert of the mixer till it clicks once but all the way in.

I think you're missing a "not" in there. ;)

But yeah, putting an unbalanced cable fully into the insert will interrupt the signal to the mains.

I'd just use TS cable. The only effect should be the lower nominal level of an unbalanced output.
