ok guys so im just a guy who plays guitar and has a ridiculous gift to think of beats in his head (hip hop and rock). I just don't even know where to start. What all do I need to get started. Let's say I have $1,000. What software should I buy considering that I want to record hip hop and rock? What other equipment will I need?

Do I need to take classes to learn how to record/mix? And does any one know of any stores in Minnesota I could go to to buy this equipment you're about to reccomend to me? thank you all very much!

No.

I don't think there's anyone here who would recommend taking classes over spending the same amount you'd spend on classes on equipment and just diving right in.

Assuming you already have a computer and assuming it's a PC, you'll need a simple interface like the MAudio 2496, a nice master keyboard like the CME UFS49, and some good software like FL Studio and Reaper.

You'll also need some monitor speakers or headphones for playback of your creations.

You should be well within your $1000 budget, and if you dig in with that stuff and come back here whenever you feel you've hit a wall, you'll be making music in no time.

I started out putting down beats on FL and then Reason. Both of these softwares are pretty good for this.
