my studio is basically in my room, where there is plenty of carpet and dampening blankets, but there is still too much noise coming from other areas in my house, and from outside (my rode nt2 will actually pick up the neighbors lawnmower, no kidding). what is the cheapest, yet most effective way to block sound from outside the room where i do my recording?

Short of building a proper "room within a room" for good isoloation, there is very little you can do to avoid the external noises.... lawnmower noise, buses, cars driving by, drive-by shootings, telephone rings are all the bane of the home recordist's existence.

Rumble (lo-cut) filters will usually work on buses and cars (and furnace rumble!), you can turn the ringer off on the phone, you'll have to avoid mic recording during lawnmower cutting - nothing's going to easily block that sound, as for the drive-by shootings - call the cops!!! ;)

You stick close to that mike and only the junkies will hear the lawn mower, seriousturtle, love the name!!
Otherwise as Bruce said - you'll have to start building ;)
