Hey,

Please give this one a listen and let me know what you think if you get a chance. This is a new tune I wrote and recorded the last week or so with the intention of being simultaneously depressing and fun  :D. It is called Too Lonely to Drink. Maybe more of a conventional sort of thing than what I've posted recently...any thoughts on the mix and/or the song?

Thanks!

I like the song. I'd like to hear just one of the vocal takes a little louder than the other. Everything is clear and articulated, but I feel I have to work to listen to the words. Bass sounds goooood. I like the sudden ending on that note.

Too bad you lost your beer, you shouldn't admit to that. ha ha ha

Long time since I've come around, and low and behold the first song on the mp3 clinic is Heats! And what a surprise! A cool country tinged, stonsey, deady, ballad, with that unmistakable Heatmeiser sound. Reminds me a little of Cracker too.

Drums sound real good, and the electric guitars are a stand out. Love the words and the vocal performance is swell. I would almost say though, that it could stand to get a little more raucous background vocal wise, especially towards the end. Could use a little hootin and hollerin':D Bass sounds nice and meaty.

Seriously though, is anyone ever really too lonely to drink?

Nice job Heat!

I love the tune dude it sounds great on my listening environment. I'm with Chili, too bad you lost your beer. LOL. Oddly the song says "Too lonely to drink" but this is the type of song that I would love to sit around and drink to.

Great song.

Cheers,
Trump

Ha! Thanks Chili :)

Yeah, I struggled a bit with the balance of the vocal parts. I really wanted the harmonies (such as they are) to be heard, but I agree there is perhaps too much blending. The main track is louder by a few dbs and has very little comp and verb. The higher harmony part has heavy comp, delay and much more verb which I thought would place it more in a supporting role, but there may still be more work to do there. Thanks again!

Hey! Great to hear from you K :D. I was wondering if you were still around. Thanks for the good word. I agree that there could be more going on with the vocals. What I have here is almost like the monkees singing some honky tonk tune...but I guess I kind of got used to that odd vibe. I may still add to this as I still have a few tracks left open.

I don't know if one can descend to such depths of despair, but I was just trying to think of something that would represent rock bottom...I think I was trying to be ironic too, but I don't really remember :p. Thanks again - now post some tunes!

Thanks a lot trump :)! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yes, this probably should be heard while drinking...oddly, very little beer went into this production. :)

I'd like to hear what you could do with less conventional chord sequences. Nice song but the bass too loud.

Thanks for checking it out beatlebum :).

Hey, at least I worked a 7th chord in there...that is like avant garde for me :p. I did want the bass loud on this, but too loud is not good - room may be playing tricks on me...damn!

I really dug this tune. The bass does sound a little too pronounced, but I love the lead guitar tone. Being fairly new to the forum, this really makes me want to go back and find previous songs that you've done. Great job.

I'm listening on headphones, but the bass sounds great to me. I love the bass line, it really keeps the song moving along. Definitely has a Grateful Dead sound to it. Love it.

Awesome. Thanks! The jury is still out on the bass...I tend to push it, perhaps too far in this instance?

Cool, thanks GZ! I never consciously try to sound dead-like, but I think it kind of permeates everything I do due to osmosis or something  :).

the bass sounds fine to me??

nothing to say about the mix, everything sounds great to me, clear, separated, balanced levels

this is like a classic drunk losers song...i could hear this being sung along to in one of the many dive bars I frequent....great stuff

has your sound all over it...a win :)

Thank you clown mo-fo :). I don't know about the bass...again, I tend to mix it heavy, and this didn't seem much different to me, but at least a couple here are hearing too much. Dive bars rule.

Sounds great! I did notice some noise in the beginning. No real problems with the mix. I'm diggin that bass tone. It really fits the song well. Those drum samples are really awesome! Are they loops or sampled?
By the way, I found your beer :drunk: :laughings:

Thanks squibble. :)

Yes, I tried to trim the excess of audio at the beginning and end, but there is definitely some old amp hum noise that I think I missed.

Good to hear the drums sound good. Sadly (in a way) I think they've become the best sounding thing on my tracks and the only thing I don't actually perform :o.

I guess technically I don't know the difference between samples and loops?

This is a set of discs I bought online with a drum library of "songs" broken out into several second bits (verse, bridge, fill, chorus, etc.) that I pick and choose from and string together. This in itself would be pretty lame, but they broke it out into 8 separate tracks (kick, snare, stereo toms, overheads and room mics) so there is a lot of flexibility when mixing. So, I'd guess those would be called loops??

Oh okay. I know I asked you about them before, but I wasn't sure. I didn't know if they were MIDI triggered or not is all I was getting at. Don't worry, your songs are definitely well preformed and are great quality.

yeah thats loops but ive never heard of construction sets that broke it down so much....great if you get what your looking for without feeling too restricted..

and theyre not the best part of your songs but they do sound good

whats the set called?

Thanks both of you...

They are called discreet drums. I think they're like 10 years old or something. Yeah, they sound pretty good right outta the box, but there are only about 30 "songs" and I've already used 4 or 5 of them and some I'll probably never find use for, so...

And no, I don't really get what I'm looking for, I actually kind of have to build songs around the drums I have rather than the other way around, so in that sense it is limiting. Kinda frustrating actually, but I'm addicted to the sound of it. Actually this was the only software I could find that was directly compatible with the roland VS recorder I bought several months back...I'll keep looking though...

This tune rocks, great job dude. I think it sounds fantastic all around!

Matt

Awesome matt - thanks. Good to hear from you. Just checked out your new one as well - good stuff! :D
