I've been looking at this thing for a while now...and I still don't know what to think. It kinda seems like it's a POD that's more virsatile and all computer run when used as an instrument in. The mic pres look a little sketchy...mostly cause I know that Modeling does NOT replace the real thing.

Thing is, it gives you some good software for di'ing Bass and Guitar - and it runs at 24/96 like my Delta 1010 and I can run it into my interface using my spdif ins.

Seems pretty versatile as a DI for instruments but is it worth it? Is it worth 200 bucks to get all the software it comes with as well as the interface?

Anyone using one yet? Could you tell me how you use it, whether it works like they say it should, and if it's worth it?

I'm curious about this thing too. I'd like to get some reviews on how those mic preamp models sound. Line 6 seems to be the first to attempt a well-advertised stab at emulating classic mic preamps. I'm actually kind of shocked that no one has stepped up to the plate (to my knowlege) with this kind of offering until now.

I've got an older PC: a 1.6 GHZ. Line 6 claims that it has "tone-direct" monitoring that allows you to hear the modeling as you record. This seems to suggest that the Toneport itself does the processing without relying on your computer's brain power (cpu, ram, etc.). BUT when you look at the system requirements for toneport, they recommend that you use a pretty hefty computer (I'm light on specifics here, but I'm thinking 2.5 ghz or there-abouts). Somebody set me straight if I'm wrong.

In a nutshell, I'm confused about whether or not this thing has any processing power - like my UA Project Pak, for example, which is a DSP card which handles it's own processing, independant of your computer's cpu.

Confused!

it needs your comp. its th same thing as the guitarport just has a mic pre.

As a guitarist my experience with the Line 6 stuff is that it all does a very admirable job at modeling preamps, stomp boxes and effects, however, I think where the product ends up falling short is in its ability to convincingly capture the essntial tonal dynamics of power tube saturation and a miced speaker cabinet which are just as important to your overall guitar sound as the preamp section. Im not saying it completely sucks in this manner, I'm just saying it doesnt quite cut it in my opinion. I have heard some stellar results though when the product gets used in conjunction with a real amp and speaker cabinet. The POD XT Live is especially geared toward this.

Fortunately since vocal recording relys more on preamps and doesnt require the emulation of power tubes driving a miced speaker cabinet, I would expect it might work much better for vocal applications than guitar (as well as certian other direct sources). I was personally fairly impressed with some of the vocal samples I heard on the Toneports web page (as well as some of the bass sounds) but would be interested to hear what some of the more advanced engineers here have to say about those samples, especailly those who actually have some of the actuall rack gear that the TP is trying to emulate. Check out the samples.........
