Ok so Let me start by telling you guys what equipment I have....I got a roland vs2400 recording workstation,5 superlux mics for close reording of my drums and 2 other mics for overheads...

Now heres my problem on toms mainly my middle tom I can't get a good sound out of it it sounds sortof dead and at the same time it distorts at certain levels, now my small tom sounds good my snare sounds good and im improving my base, just that one tom has a certain tone that doesnt come off good in the mic.Im kindof a noob right now when it comes to recording im trying to get better I dont know if theres something I need to know about recording toms....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tuning, tuning, tuning, tuning. Always start from the source and work your way out. Tuning. (Once more, just for emphasis :p )

Good drums also can't sound good if they have bad or old heads!

I just got brand new heads and I thought I had them tuned right ofcourse im not an expert tuner. Anything else that can cause it? I will post a recorded clip of all my drums tomarrow might help you guys understand what it is im hearing.

Hmmm...could be the bearing edge has a problem or the shell is out of round. Are these new drums or older? If you have a really flat surface, like a countertop, take the heads off and put the drum down on it. Shine a flashlight in the center and look for large gaps where the light shines through. If that's OK, the shell might be out of round or have air pockets between the laminations.

Check to see that the bearing edge comes to a point and has no flat or wide spots. It should be fairly sharp.
