Right, there is a huge diffrence for sure, but they (vh1) made him out to be a fool, big time.
.
that's certainly true.
let's look at the differences between drumset and quad toms:
drumset:
-played sitting down
-played using feet and hands
-drums set up on/supported by floor
-played using lightweight, small diameter, evenly balanced drumsticks
-time keeping aided by steady beats on hi-hat/ride cymbal
-drummer controls tempo of band
-drums set up in such a way that everything is within reach, and is generally set up to conform to the natural movements of the human body. drummer can set up drums however is most comfortable
-drummer has access to cymbals, snare, bass drum for sound variety
-generally used for rock/metal/jazz
quad toms:
-played standing up...while marching around, no less
-played using only hands
-drums set up on/supported by shoulders/back
-played using front-heavy, large diameter mallets
-drummer has no cymbal to keep a steady beat on
-tempo is determined by "drum major" standing on a platform 100 feet away (or farther depending on where on the field you happen to be marching)
-set up in a flat plane, movements must conform to a rigid, unalterable design
-drummer only has toms at their disposal resulting in a very limited vareity of sounds
-generally used for university fight song and/or fleetwood mac's "tusk"
i think we should cut tommy some slack on this one.
