What is up with this going to school thing, and then not being able to play the drum in band class.

I am not sure what is worse, him doing that show, or me watching it right after Gene Simmons rock school.

hahahahaha yeah

you know he really sucks when my drummer who is 15 can play better than his sorry ass

I bet you he can't even read drum notation

Thanks for assuming we'd know what the hell you're talking about.

Wha....????

He's talking about a cable TV show called Tommy Lee Goes To College (or something to that effect.)

I have not watched the show, so I don't know now poorly he does with the college band - however, I know plenty of very good drummers who are self taught and can groove well and play tunes but can not read and can not play rudiments well.

Perhaps that is why he has trouble with the school band - or maybe he just sucks. Candidly, he's never made it to the list of my favorite drummers.

in his defense, there's a world of difference between playing a drumset and playing quad toms.

still, he was sucking it up pretty bad.

Right, there is a huge diffrence for sure, but they (vh1) made him out to be a fool, big time.

I guess he will just have to take his wad of cash for doing the show to his huge house in his montley crue bently and go have sex with his hot girlfriends, and forget about it.

I wonder if some of that motley crue drumming was done by someone else and then taught to Tommy Lee? If I recall right The album titeled Motley Crue, Had The best drums.

That show couldn't have been more staged if it was on broadway. The part where the snuck into the art museum and hung a replica of the Mona Lisa with Tommy’s face. Funny, but I would venture most schools have decent security systems.

I think he was just hamming it up for the cameras. He goes from not even being able to get the rhythm right to nailing it a week later? Hum….

At least Tommy’s show had “The Hot Tutor.” Gene's show is a waste of film. Except for the part where the kids make fun of him. Probably what most Kiss fans are doing at this point.

.

that's certainly true.

let's look at the differences between drumset and quad toms:

drumset:

-played sitting down
-played using feet and hands
-drums set up on/supported by floor
-played using lightweight, small diameter, evenly balanced drumsticks
-time keeping aided by steady beats on hi-hat/ride cymbal
-drummer controls tempo of band
-drums set up in such a way that everything is within reach, and is generally set up to conform to the natural movements of the human body. drummer can set up drums however is most comfortable
-drummer has access to cymbals, snare, bass drum for sound variety
-generally used for rock/metal/jazz

quad toms:

-played standing up...while marching around, no less
-played using only hands
-drums set up on/supported by shoulders/back
-played using front-heavy, large diameter mallets
-drummer has no cymbal to keep a steady beat on
-tempo is determined by "drum major" standing on a platform 100 feet away (or farther depending on where on the field you happen to be marching)
-set up in a flat plane, movements must conform to a rigid, unalterable design
-drummer only has toms at their disposal resulting in a very limited vareity of sounds
-generally used for university fight song and/or fleetwood mac's "tusk"

i think we should cut tommy some slack on this one.

He should see if they would let him play in a big steal cage in the center of the field, and have it spin upside down set on fire.

I think both performers are more interested in capturing a middle age, middle America audience like The Osbournes did than what their fans think....

The other thing is, if he gets screwed up and is the only drummer, all he has to do is stay in time. If he screws up in a marching band situation, there are 5 other guys doing it right and his mistakes are obvious.
