try the oktava 012's - they rule...and they are pretty forgiving on the playing...much more so than 414's and 451's!

the 604's rule too. so easy to clip, too...i think i'm going that direction.

That's an intriguing statement. I'm curious as to what that means, exactly. What is it about the mic that you are describing as "forgiving" of the drummer's playing. What is it capturing or not capturing, compared to the other mics you mentioned?

I'm assuming it doesn't improve the drummer's time... :p

Nope, my mistake. I used the TM211 tom mics. I'll read a little closer next time.

OK that makes sense...the M179 is incredible...you should try those!

the problem i have with just overheads is that i cant process the toms individually ...

ive got 2 octava mc012 s ..ive been using as overheads .... maybe i need a third and try em direct on toms ???..... then id need to get 2 new overheads???
i only paid like 49.00 each for mine at guitar ctr.

i think you bought the chinese ones ... ut oh ... actually ive heard that they arent much worse than the russian ones

Actually for a while GC was blowing out the Russian made ones, just before the Chinese versions came out. They were indeed 2 for $99 more than once in the last few years.

No more apparently though.

DAMN................. i want those as overheads

... maybe MXL 603s

To me, the mc012 sounds pretty bad as overheads because I prefer cymbals to sound like they don't have tarps over them (just my opinion). But for close micing toms, they rock. The proximity effect is flattering, especially on a floor tom, and the "veiled" sound can be good for toms because it's not so critical, you notice the body of the sound more than the nitty gritty stick contact or ping from the rim. (don't forget the -10db pad.)

Almost forgot, the best part is that you can whack them with a stick and they can actually take it and keep on ticking. And if you blow one out, big deal, it's just an oktava!

The question is, which MC012's were you using - the Chinese or Russian?

I think quality control was a real issue with Oktavas. If you sort through a whole pile of them (what I did at Guitar Center years ago) you can often come up with a couple of gems, and a whole lot more that sound like crap.

The couple I have don't sound anything like what you describe, but that's not surprising. In the case of Oktavas, given the importance of auditioning the specific mics you are going to get,I would say buying them via mail-order would be a really bad idea.
