lets say i have 600 bucks and 3 toms to mic, what would you buy???..err i mean what should i buy :D

Audix D2's would be a nice choice. Although sm57's work great on toms too. I use Audix's and I love them, but I've also used 57's without much difference.

yeah i was thinkin abotu just goin with the basic 57 ... always a good choice! and cheap

I'd say you'd be just fine to go that route, in fact both Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All had 57's on the toms.

The Oktava mc012 is a nice tom mic in that price range. Very roundish sound and don't forget the -10db pad.

MD421's

At least 1 of them anyhow. Nothing says they have to all be the same ya know. I use a sm57 on the first tom and 421's on the 2nd and floor.

god id love MD421's .. but they are just too much!!! dammit lol i think you recommended those to me a while ago and i still want them so bad

maybe for now do 57s then upgrade to MD421's?

What about ATM25s? You can get those for less than $200 a piece.

Or, even SP B1s.
yeah spb1's were also a thing i was thinking of in the past ... i want a really clear and crisp sound and since the spb1's are condensors .. they seem like they would be the best choice?

I've heard of people using them on toms with decent results.

As previously mentioned the Audio Technica ATM25's are a mic that is used quite a bit by the pros for toms. I got mine for about $140 each.

ivebeen recommended many things already in this thread

i have heard other things about the Electro Voices

you prefer them over all the other ideas?

It's all subjective man. Really you should be able to throw a 57 up there and get close to what any other mic has to offer. Plus it's toms, how much money do you want to put on recording toms? Sometimes I like how they sound on the overheads alone.

yeah that is a good thought

... they are only toms, but i did notice that they are what is lacking on my recordings .. but i also have many other things on the shopping list

i think recording drums is all about tuning... maybe ill use a little extra cahs and get some new heads and a drum dial lol

thanks alot everyone for all the great ideas

That sounds like a good idea. I had a pro come in and tune my drums and the difference was night and day, I mean fucking huge. Just remember, they're only toms. I'd put my money on my overheads snare and kick.

i noticed a couple of people mentioning the audix's...you can actually get the audix drum package with a D6, D4, a pair of D2's, and an i5 for around $600, including the road case and rim mounts...musician's friend/sweetwater and the like ask $650, but it's possible to find it for less

edit: i have to add the the i5 is a damned sweet snare mic

I got a pair with sequential serials off ebay for $500.

Sennheiser 604's, they sound an awfull lot like 421's but you should be able to pick up a 3 pack for around $300. (last time I checked) I use these things instead of 421's because I don't like people hitting the 421's with the stick.

If you want your toms to sound big, open, clear, bassy and round (like a tom) I'd take a listen to the CAD M179 on toms.

Best tom sound I've ever achieved, I own 3 for them now.

Hypercardioid with pad engaged = done. Easy to place also.
