anyone have any experience with toft pre amps.....specifically the new atc-2, but any info would be appreciated...thanx

As you, I have been anxiously awaiting word on this.
It is just now shipping. I believe Mercenary is going to carry them.

The reviews should be forthcoming (unless you beat me to buying one) perhaps someone will post soon.
 
While FLetcher is still testing it, here is what he has said so far on his own Forum at Prosoundweb...

" FWIW... it's still in the 'testing phase' in our world... there are a couple of 'issues' that have required definition, and a couple of other small things I've encountered that I haven't relayed to Alan and Malcolm yet... but I will and I'm sure they'll address them.

So far... overall... it's not doing badly... there are some aspects of it that are way better than other aspects of it... but at the 'price point' I think it's going to do OK.

FWIW, and I'll get into it more when I get into it more... the equalizer is well worth the price of admission"

i got it. it is phenominal . the eq is so easy to use and covers a wide spectrum of sound. the compressor has the ability to keep tones from overpowering the mix without making them "boxy"
Fletch- I can't see why you don't like the pre, It is very clean and has plenty of gain. I mean no disrespect, I would just like your take on this

Hey Big K!

What other pres do you have to work with that you have for comparison?
I'd appreciate what you have for reference,because of my interest in the Toft pre as well.
 
I was thinking of getting one of these, but the first review (Fletcher's) kinda scared me off. I'm not really that concerned with EQ or compressors (although these would be an added bonus IF the amps are good.) I'm looking for a couple of channels of good clean power. I may just have to up my budget a bit and go with a Langevin, Manley, John Hardy, Blue Tube...... :D I'm going to watch the Toft reviews for a while though. You never know about the relationship among these sellers and higher-end users and the motives behind which or the reference points from which they are basing their comments. Seems to be a bit of ego competition among them at times. Also, some of these people have to hang together at times and I'm sure they try not to offend one another >>>(one thing that makes Fletcher's review somewhat believeable - he took a risk there.) I'm not trying to cast a bad light on anyone with these comments - just acknowledging human nature. I suppose sometimes you just have to take the plunge and try some of these machines for yourself. But.... a review like Fletcher's can really dampen the enthusiasm..... I mean, who wants to buy a channel strip with great EQ, mediocre compression and sorry preamps? However, I suppose you can't really expect to get two fabulous amps, EQs and comps for a thousand bucks - but.... you can always hope. I thought it was probably too good to be true. That usually is the case if it 'seems' too good to be true, but the way the cost curve is turning for this kind of stuff, something like this should be more and more obtainable. I'll just keep watching.

For $500 a channel - Me. And i don't think i read the words "mediocre" or "sorry" in that review anywhere.
 
yo alan is there a future plan on making a stand alone eq? if the snobbiest of gear snobs(fletcher ;)) says its good, its gonna sound like heaven to me most likely...

That would explain why you found the pre to be good and I didn't... point of reference.

FWIW, I don't shoot out stuff based on price. No one has ever heard a 'price tag' on a recording, all they hear are sounds, and that's how I evaluate... "how does X work in A, B, C, D applications".

So... in my world, the pre's in this unit have to try to compete with Great River pre's, Phoenix pre's, DW Fearn pre's, Martech pre's, Crane Song, etc. etc. etc.

A Honda 'Accord' is a very nice car... don't bother tying to get it to qualify at "Daytona"... and it's far better than any of the cars that run at Daytona when you need to pick up groceries... but in my world, I don't do the grocery shopping... make sense?

StevenLindsey ... sorry if my review 'curbed your enthusiasm'... but it was my assessment of the unit as it related to my reality... hence the "take it with a grain of salt... or 40" comment.

Would you consider the pres a step up from the the RNP or on par?
Just a point of reference for me.

And I appreciate your assessment. That's what I look for. If I'm going to spend chunks of money on some of this stuff, I'd rather get the real story before, I shell it out. For folks like me, that green ain't growing on trees. And I've learned the lesson about buying junk and then having to replace it. I will soon have some spending money freed up ( Lord willing ) and I would like to get it right the first time. So.. just keep on telling it like you see it.

Depending on application, I consider the pre's in RNP superior in some roles, equal in other roles and probably not as good in a role or two [those roles have yet to be defined... but I'm sure they're out there.

.... and it's a good lesson to learn. If you're looking for "pre's"... it might be a good idea to look at some of the other available options... but for a grand, there aren't a whole shitload of options of superior quality.

If you're looking for a pair of equalizers... this is one of the better $1k options I've heard.

If you're looking for an 'OK Compressor'... you've found a pair for a grand... if you're looking for a pair of absolutely drop dead gorgeous as in to die for great for 2 buss and beyond... then make sure you have at least $2500 to throw at the project.

I was just curious what roles you consider the RNP to be strongest at? I know it always depends, but any general observations?
