I'm so sorry.
Good pop record, great interesting recording. Wow. I thought I would hate this.

Anyone a fan?

Also, out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea exactly what the limiter is that's crushing the drums and making the whole thing sound like early Queen?

i'm still interested in finding this out as well.....

my guess is, a really nice limiter across the drum buss....

Todd Rundgren is great! Been a fan all my life.

He was one of the few engineers at the time that demanded every drum be mic'ed vs 2 or 3 capturing a whole set. I think the limiters he used were urei 1176's. He used them on everything. Most of Something/Anything was recorded at ID sound in L.A. They had a drum booth that was about the size of a closet so that may be one key to the sound, Todd also likes his drums tuned really low, almost to where the wrinkles are showing.

There's a great book that just came out called "A wizard, A true star, Todd Rundgren in the studio" that talks about all of his production work and recording adventures. It would be an interesting read for anyone who's into home recording because he was one of the early "Home studio" owners.

I was just reading about how much he liked the 1176 on drums (who doesn't). I'll try to find the link to see if he's talking about individual drums or a drum buss.

Just saw him last week perform the whole Todd double album... side a through side d...what a trip.

Had Praire Prince, Greg Hawkes and Kasim Sultan in the band...

I saw the Todd/Healing show in Boston (at Berklee, no less!) 2 weeks ago and last year's Akron one as well. Big fan.

Paul Myer's book, mentioned above is a must for musicians interested in recording - you don't get a lot of details, but its a good read.

I hate him for writing a song about me ..... I''m Piss Aaron. :D

Only joking! I''ve seen Todd live more than any other performer.

Lt. Bob is a big fan as well! Now were is that boy?

moresound - I see you're from New Hampshire - I live in Methuen, Mass - did you go to the Berklee show? How about last year's Salisbury, MA one?
Likewise, I've seen Todd more than any other performer. Guessing around 25 times now.

I was actually at the concert video recorded in Columbus, Ohio for the "Adventures in Utopia" tour. Still to this day have not seen the DVD. Maybe my 18 year old face is caught on camera (many many moons ago). Man Im getting old. You guys remember the motorcycle drum set ?

yeah ...... I was into him all the way back to the Nazz.
In fact, I practically forced the band I was in around 1970 to do some Nazz tunes.
I liked him less in Utopia although to be fair I only gave that a quick listen ....... probably need to check them out a bit more now that i'm much much much older!

No. I miss a lot of great shows for the simple fact that I have a live sound company and I'm always on the road doing other shows.

Next time sneak a recorder into the show and record it for me! :D

Ah there is my main man ....... yeah The Nazz.
Always thought it funny seeing old Todd on the Hollywood squares as well!

Probably Todd's less known contributions for the unfan is his guitar work, backing singing and of course being the producer of *Bat out of Hell*. Todd always says that 6 figure monthly check sure looks good every time it comes in the mail.

Lt. is on that much much much older kick again! :D Did he tell you that when God said *let there be light* .............. He got to throw the switch? :laughings:

It was at the Berklee Perfomance Center.
Nice place..Surprisingly his voice was in pretty good shape.

Not to be disrespectful to Todd but I always thought that his voice was always on the verge of slipping. It's a one of a kind type of voice that grows on ya.

Hey Tom ..... I was in GC in Boston yesterday and your name came up along with Ed from Q division! All good things were said.

Good to hear. One of the reasons I liked Something/Anything a lot was that TR played ALL the instruments on the first 3 sides. Good song writing... great production. I agree his vocal was never the best but he could pull off that Philly soul thing pretty well.
He was also quite the producer... XTC, Grand Funk, Bad Finger etc...
