Came across this thread on the Reaper forum: Do you use more gear than Todd Rundgren?

It links to this Podcast from 2010 where Todd is interviewed about his recording techniques for the Arena album. Todd talks about using reverb, and gates and lots more.

Interesting that in the Reaper forum no one disparages Todd for using amp simulation and drum software. :)

OK, haven't read the links yet, but one of the reasons Todd was always in demand as a producer was that he could bring a project in early and under budget. Record companies love that kind of stuff. Put him at odds with the artists quite often, though.

There are many things I both loved and hated about Todd's earlier work. I loved the craftsmanship of the songwriting and his adventurous style and spirit. Up until 'Adventures In Utopia', though, I couldn't stand the sound of his albums. All midrange and cluttered. Almost a reverse scoop. I loved the songs, but they were physically hard to listen to, extremely fatiguing. Adventures In Utopia was different, though. Listen to 'Caravan' on headphones sometime. But nothing compared to seeing him do the Ra/Adventures tour live. Almost a religious experience.
