To POD or NOT To POD

I've read about 50 reviews on the LINE 6 POD
all of them good but I have 2 questions
1) I didn't hear anything about the effects everyone raved about the amp modeling but how are the effects?
2)What is the difference Ver. 1 and Ver. 2?

(1) The effects are pretty good; if it's great effects you want, though, don't buy a POD for that.

(2) The main differences are that Version 2 has several more amp models, and they all can be accessed from the front panel (in the earlier version, certain models, cabinets, and effects parameters could only be manipulated through a computer with a MIDI interface and the SoundDiver software that comes with the POD).
