Our singer has a notion that next time we record, he wants to take the raw mix home, import it to a program like Cakewalk or something, and do the vocals at home at his own leasure, so he doesn't have to feel the pressure of the studio. Then he can mix down his track to a wav, and take it back to our studio on a cdr and give it further processing.
I was thinking we could get him an NT1, but what would we put between the mic and the soundcard? Something with a line out, and something that has like a limiter and/or compressor (our band is metal and we alternate between yelling, talking, singing, etc). I've heard about the Art Tube MP, but after checking it out I'm starting to see that it is not the greatest thing in the world because it is noisy or something. We're not wanting to get too expensive here, but we do want a decent dry recording of the vocals. Oh yeah, and we will be treating the room he will sing in. Just need the most economical solution to put between that mic and the soundcard.

The most economical solution to put between that mic and the soundcard IS a Tube MP.

Unless you want a bit of compression too, then there are heaps of mic preamps + compressors in all kinds of price ranges.
Search here and check prices on online forums like http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837, http://www.samash.com and so on. Then when you have narrowed it doww to to or three options, ask here again to see if anybody has experience with several of them.

Uh, you know what, I think I'm stupid, there's another thread already going right now pretty much dealing with the exact same thing.

Could I join your band

And then could you guys buy me some stuff as well?

I'm a very good vocalist with a Presonus Bluetube but I need a new mic...looking at the AT4033. If you buy it for me I will do your vocals...

All kidding aside - I love the Presonus - it's stereo and it's only $150.

does your vocalist really think he can match studio conditions with an NT1 and a mic pre?? Sounds like a tall order.

I agree with zip on this one. If you were to get studio results there is no way a nt-1 (a decent mic) could compmare to a neumann u89. But if you are hell bent on doing it, get the best mic and pre you can afford. Might even try a sm57 or 58. Chino of the Deftones used sm57's and 58's on the first to albums, so it can be done on a limited budget.

FREE SHIT FOR EVERYBODY!!!!

Well, all we really have been using for vocals is a sm57 with a pop filter and some compression through a good mixer into the comp at "The Studio" and have gotten tolerable results. But he wants to do them at his own place at his own leasure. Should he really have to buy a mixer and rackmount processors and all that crap just record a single vocal track? That's why these preamps are intriguing me.... kind of an 'all in one' thingie for the vox.

I'll definately do a search on those sites and ask around about 'em on here! Thanks!!!

studio SM57....

If you are using a SM57 at the studio then I retract my statement...a good condenser / mic pre combo into a PC should yield good results. I'd also have him try the SM57 through the mic pre. As I have learned crusing the board - a more expensive mic does not always mean a better mic....depends on the voice.

Most probably the condenser will sound better but still try both.
