Due to my previous frustration and failure at building a computer dedicated to my music I have decided that now is a good time to enlist the help of my fellow musicians. My K62 -500, 128mb ram, 10gb & 40gb hard drives, sblive soundcard, WinME and sonar just ain't cutting it. I have been searching for a new computer. I was seruiosly considering the "roll your own" on prorec, but I am not quite sure I trust the via chipset. Does anybody have any suggestions/ideas. I am willing to get a new system, soundcard, or whatever it takes to get my system stable. Win9x and Me are unreliable, and Win2k and XP hang during installation. I have done the checks on software/hardware compatibility and everything checks out good. I am tired of spending more time troubleshooting the computer than recording. I would prefer to stick with Sonar, but am willing to part with it and learn something new if it means my system won't crash all the time...

The only equipment I use is a Alesis QS6.1, DM5, and a DSP1000Pro, and whatever plug-ins I can get my hands on.

The mobo in the "roll your own thunderbird" seems fine. If you want to get away from VIA, check out the TUSL2-C and PIII. All your other parts should cut it. Then there's always the question of soundcards but that's another story.

I will check out TUSL2-C, thanks for the reply. I really have a need for only 6 - 8 inputs of audio and someway to get midi into the computer. Any ideas on that?

I have thus far never recorded more than 4 (L/R DM5 main outs + L/R DM5 aux outs) inputs at one time, but would like the capability of possible doing 6 to 8 at once.

I have a VIA chipset on my Abit KT7a-RAID. I have had no problems whatsoever with it.

As usual, I will recommend the c-port (aka DSP24 with ADC/DAC2000 brakout box) as a great first studio soundcard. 8 I/O and other bells and whistles. Great value in my opinion.

Thanks for the info... I will check into the C-Port as well...

What is your setup like? OS? ram? etc...

Althlon 1.4, 1000+mb ram, Abit KT7a RAID with IBM 7299 raid hard-drive .... dual boot between ME for Audio and XP Pro for games. In actual fact it is very much a games system. I play games a lot as well as audio.

My soundcard is the M-Audio Delta 66 Omni Studio. No problems yet and very satisfied.
