Just wondered if anyone had any good tips for micing toms. I'm using Shure SM-57s (I want to upgrade to Seinheiser 421s when I have the cash) to individually mic toms at the moment. I'm recording with a Roland VS-2480. I am getting pretty good sounds by either pointing the mics straight down about an inch above the top edges of the toms or pointing the mics towards the center of the tom, but I am just wondering if there's some tip or trick that I am missing that would improve the sound.

Try backing the mics off from the drums about 6" or so. It gives the sound a chance to develope before it gets into the mic.

toms...

well.. bascially toms are just in how you mic em. (duhh... haha) anyway, closer you are more attack, farther away more room sound. so that part is quiet easy. Now your room clearly will make a big difference too.... to be honest i don't think an sm57 is that bad of a mic. for toms at all. I use it myself, basically because it is like 4 times cheaper than a md421... but hey, they aren't bad. I would suggest getting other equiptment rahter than wasting it on a tom mic your dont' really "need." Also try messing around with position as far as how close you are to the tom rim and to the middle. Middle should also get more tone and less attack than the rim side. And do yourself a favour and make sure your toms sound good to begin with. I am also like many others on this forum a true believer in "crap in = crap out" I'm sure you know this... Well good luck with the toms and all
