Refused and the Used are the only bands I've heard that have 100% perfect screams. I love poison the well, thursday, from autumn to ashes, etc. But those guys just dont cut it compared to refused and the used. Guess what bert mccraken from the used does............... smoke like crazy.

And I listened to your band, the song Lights Out. Not bad stuff. Did you record yourself? Here is my screamo band www.mp3.com/oldfashioned . Check out the songs "Cornfield Lullabies" and "Folding Chair Fiasco" . We recorded these about a half year ago, they aren't really exactly as pumped up and out there as some of our more current stuff. WHat do you think of our screamer, is that what youre going for? cause i could ask him some tips.

so now that i just got my C1, i figured it would rule on any vox. i was wrong, not screamo. evenw thi -30db of pads on the mic, it still distorted! haha.
now, lucky for me, i was gonna add a touch of distortion to these vox anyway later on this particular song. the mic added the perfect sound that worked for it, ha.

but of course, when we wanted the clean screams, i ended up just going back to my 58 for now. options were limited. however, i also sometimes use my mxl 603s for screamo vox. sometimes it souinds TOO midrangy, but then some days, it just seems to work better. i try them both out when we record. ha. see what fits the song best.

anyway, yes - scream your heart out.

Im not trying to ber a prick, but if you were there during the Thursday recordings and know about the gear they used and everything, than wouldnt you of known there album title also?

I dunno what they used on "Full Collapse"... but on the new Thursday album [I think I heard someone say it's going to be called "War All The Time"] they used a Soundelux ELUX 251 into a Daking Mic Pre/EQ into a Daking Compressor into an Innertube Audio "Atomic Squeezebox".

For all I know you may be working with them though,

You gotta get your blood sugar level up to severe twitching to get a really good scream, plus lose some of your inhibitions too. Here's what we do: buy a big bag of Skittles and a big bag of licorite bites, mix them in a big bowl and wash down with beer. It's important for everybody in the studio to eat & drink, not just the screamer, because you need that energy level for everybody, so everybody starts feeling that goofy sugar alcohol buzz and just feed off of everybody else. A good scream should make you feel giddy. Also drink a couple of beers but no peeing until after you get a good scream. If you do it right, you'll wet yourself a little.

And once we get the scream down, how do we EQ it ?

So it doesn't get lost in the mix.

Thanks

Don't scream....we can work it out...

The happy folk singer...

You want a solid clean scream, minimal eq should be used. A tad of upper midrange boost will often help a vocal cut through, though (and a little cut off the high end if your usiing a shitty mic).

science one - i have the dmp2 (very very hot preamp....the dmp3 fixes this problem! haha).

on a side note - your drums (i think it's the kick drum mostly) killlllllll my ears....sounds like it's just way overly compressed. it murders me. haha.
on another side note - i dig the screams, they rule.

OH GOD I KNOW. the drums are a major regret for me. so much compression had to be used because only 2 mics were available at the time, a 57 and a shitty mxl 2001. tracking those drums were painful. luckily those super low budget days are semi-over (just semi). the main focus was the scream though, pay no attention to anything else.......... at all. haha.

ive never used the dmp3 or 2, thoughts?

I worked as the drum and guitar tech on the initial round of basics [13 songs which were recorded at Big Blue Meenie in Jersey City, NJ], and hung around for some of the guitar and vocal overdubs on an additional 4 songs that were being overdubbed in "The Farmhouse" at Longview Farm in N. Brookfield, MA.

Seeing that this forum is "Home Recording", and this was a 'major label' production [Island/Def Jam] I didn't think my direct involvement was all that relevant... but seeing as you asked... during the initial basics session Geoff mentioned the name of the album... but things can change [like there was a that 'reality based' TV series that CNN did in Iraq 'n shit] and I've worked on enough albums where the "working title" of the album wasn't the album title that showed up in the stores... which is why I wasn't all that definitive about the album title.

As for the "vocal chain"... of that I'm quite positive as I saw it in actual use.

FWIW... I'm not in the habit of posting things that are rumors unless I preface the tid bit with "I heard ______"

well, dmp2 (since older model..and you can only buy it used) was my choice...simply because of the little amount of money i could spend for it - and it's still a fine unit (as long as you have plenty of mic pads! ha)...
the dmp3 is the upgraded model, as far as i know i think it's pretty much the same preamp...just improved as far as not needing as many mic pads, ha! it also has included on it a -10db switch. Also, the design was changed a lot, and it has some VU meters instead of just a "signal" light.

check it out though at m-audio.com . I love the sound of my dmp2. pretty transparent. a HUGE step up from the preamps on my beheringer mx802a mixer (what a mistake..haha).

Well how does a dmp3 stack up to mackie pres (the xdr's)? I want to have some good spare pres, and ive got a 16 channel mackie now. I'm thinking that (or a pile of dmp3's) for drums/multiple mic situations and my RNP for whatever tracks need extra attention

Thanks for the replys guys,

and thanks for the replys Fletcher, your input is very intresting to me and valuable.

Can I bug you about one more question though, and its OK if you dont knwo this, but as far as Geoff's screams, did they run them through the same setup and most importantly, how did he get that screaming tone?

Was it "digital distortion" fomr screaming right in teh mic?

Or EQ'd or when you (if you did) heard him scream, does he just have that sceraming voice naturaly?

thanks!

i think the best screams i've heard from thursday were in jet black new year.........bad recording.......great song.......... and man those screams are hardcore.
