My friend a small budget and can only afford monitors in the 500 dollar bracket. I am looking at 3 pairs:

Monitor 1 Mk2 Powered
Yamaha MS10's (could someone give me link to find these)
Behringer Truth B2031

I have some Monitor Ones and an Alesis RA300 amp and they sound pretty good. I have never heard any of the other 2 others so I was hoping you guys could help me out. Could you just give me a brief synopsis of why or why not and maybe post a link to a review if you know of one.

Thanks

I don't think the yamaha MS10 is in that price range, should be the MSP5 .

If I were you, I'd go for the MSP5 cos that's what I have.... :)

then again, choosing monitors is a very personal thing.... YOU will eventually have to make your own decision. :)

You will never get all 3 sets for that price, Its better to settle on one good pair at that price

By the way its NS10s

Yamaha do MSP10s as well as NS10s. The MSP10s are expensive.

Ooops...I meant that he was going to choose ONE PAIR FROM THE THREE. Sorry to be confusing.

Gidge...Are the JBL's powered and would you say they are better than the monitor ones?

And about the Yamaha's, I think I meant the NS10's. The ones that every one talks about. You know "The ones that every studio has a pair of." Are they the best for the money?

Does anyone know where there are some reviews on these. I read the review on the Behringer Truths at ProRec. (10 powered monitors) The Truths got a bad rating, but were then recommended for price to performance ratio. They were certainly up against some tough competition though. It seems like Behringer stuff isn't too bad. (all though some hate their mixers)

I personnally would like to tell him to get Tannoy Reveals. I have heard and worked with them quite a bit and I like them. Very bass heavy in the room I use them in though.

Thanks, and let me know

the NS10s are gonna be hard to find (unless you go used). I would recommend those however. I got lucky and picked a pair up, but if these ever went down, I'd probably get a pair of the MSP5s. Haven't quite heard them yet, but the frequency curve is very similar to the ns10s. As long as they have the hyped mid/high range, then I'd go there. Tiring on the ears? depends on who you ask. Me, I say a little, but not to the point of irritation. They'll tell you when you go wrong though. Reverb truth is great through the ns10s, and so are punchin/edits. The low end is a little mushy, but very workable. Buy a clean amp with it though.

Peace out,
Mike

The JBL's sounded a but midrangy to me, but they were up kinda high on a shelf in the music store I heard them at. No?

Behringer Truth Experience

I have had mine for about 3 weeks. First impressions while opening the box was how heavy they were, 30 lbs each. I have driven them to painful levels with no clipping. They are rated at 150W to the 8.75" Long Throw Woofer and 75W to the Tweeter. The sound spectrum seems to be flat across the board. They can be fine tuned for room acoustics and they are supposedly a matched pair. I paid $398 for the pair at 8th Street Music.

I am an extreme novice at recording, but it was an immediate improvement to the final mixdowns I was making using some Peavy sp5's and at times using headphones. What sounded good during mixdown sucked on jamboxes, car and home stereos. The mixes I hear on the Truth's sound good when played back on stereo equipment. You do need to listen to your favorite CD's to get an idea of how to listen to the mix. Listening to a flat response takes getting used to, but the Truths add nothing to the sound. What you hear is what you get.

I know a lot of people trash Behringer products, but the two Behringer products I own have been great. I have the B2 microphone. It is so much better sounding on vocals than the 58's I was using. I am in a southern gospel trio and the B2 seems to give better "presence" with little need for EQ'ing in the mixdown. It has a little bit of a mid high boost to the sound, but overall it is very warm and at $199 which included case and shockmount, can't be beat. Hope to afford bigger and better in the future, but for my current needs, these two Behringer products have been great, a lot cheaper than a divorce lawyer.:o

I read the review you are refering to. The speakers at that time were about $700 a pair. They rated them at a D- but like I said they sound good to me. I doubt a 'Pro' would put his reputation on the line and recommend something along the lines of Behringer. I would definetly buy what they recommend if I were financially self sufficient, but I'm not. That is what I like about HomeRecording.com, for the most part people base their opinions on experience and not hearsay. I don't like "I've never seen one, touched one or played one, but I know they suck because they are brand 'X'". People here will tell you something sucks because they had one and experienced it. When you read several of the same comments for a product then you shy away. Hopefully a year from now I can say the monitors and the mic are still good. Time will tell. Good luck on whatever you purchase.

Thanks so much for all the great advice. I'll guess maybe we'll get on e-bay and look for those ns10's. If not maybe we'll see if we can take a road trip to MarsMusic and try a bunch of these monitors out.

This forum is awesome. I really like being able to get opinions from people that are not working at the comapany or don't get kickbacks from recommending certain products.

Thanks

I love my KRK Rokits The BEST small moniters on the market around the $500 dollar price range. Guitar center had a pretty good deal on these with a Hafler Amp. and yes I did 2 months worth of research and listening before I settled on them : )

I'm in the same boat and I've also been looking at the Event PS5 and PS6. Also, what should you look for in the specc? I've been looking at frequency responce and the Alesis and the PS6 go down to 45Hz, while the JBLs go to 70Hz. Is this a BIG thing because i have heard lots of good stuff about the JBL.
