Good ones! Let me add a joke I heard last month: What's the difference between a rock musician and a jazz musician?

The rock musician plays three chords in front of a thousand people....
 
Don't copy your hero's stuff, use it as inspiration to develop your own style.
You're not the best guitar player around.
You can always get better,so stay open minded.
 
Just one to add...
A $2000 guitar will sound like shit if you're still playing through a $100 amp.

My 3 secrets -

1) Dry is better than wet, and wet is to disguise sloppy playing
2) Ducktaping horns and covering the deck with RANCID stickers doesn't make you sound hardcore. It makes you look like a douche
3) 8-strings are for losers :D

Easy, killer, I'm a seven stringer myself and I know a number of VERY talented and technically accomplished 8-stringers who would disagree with that. ;)
 
Here's my three:

1. You gotta be bad before you can be good, so play as much as you can to get that part of it over with as soon as possible.

2. You will get better much faster playing with others rather than playing with yourself. Oh, you know what I mean...

3. Learn to play some styles that aren't exactly your cuppa tea; you'll bring over a different perspective to your genre of choice.

Excellent advice, and it applies to more than just guitar playing.

It has not been difficult for me to find people who play more sophisticated genres than my own, and somehow those musicians seem often to be better than me too....

I'm guessing if your LYAO--it's because you can relate! :D

Stems from a true story unfortunately. Did a rare gig with some good friends, and it was video taped. As good as I felt about the set we played, I had a hard time looking at myself on the TV screen.

The flipside it obviously, as hard as it was to look at my old dorky looking self, I still felt really good about that set! :D
 
hmmmmm .........
1. There are no secrets that will make you good if you don't play a lot ....... practice and playing with others is vital.

2. There is no equipment that will magically make you a great player. Satriani or Vai (or insert great guitarists' name here) can play on a SX thru a cheap Crate and still blow you off the stage even if you have the very best most expensive gear there is.

3. The most important thing is to enjoy playing, hell ... to LOVE playing. If you do ..... you'll play a lot and you will constantly get better.


oh ...... and at 56 I can tell you that you can still look cool if you wear the right clothes .......... and a hat! :D

Dude, look at my avatar? I may not be Mr. Clean--but I really put my "head" into choosing that avatar, if you know what I mean. Are you telling me I should cover that dome up? :confused:
 
Dang, makes me wonder how emo bands are gonna look like in 30 years, and how they're gonna handle it!
