I'd posted about the UA Lion. Which I've been wearing out as time allows. Just a KILLER fun, usable Plexi modeler.

Just yesterday UA finally released their Dumble Overdrive Special modeler (Enigmatic). Just a couple days after enjoying this really fun video from Tim Pierce demo'ing the just-sold Carlos Santana OD Special. Good timing. :thumbs up:

Anyway - yeah. I had $400 burning a hole in my pocket so this one is on the way. After work slows down (hopefully - I need a breather) I'll try to put together a demo of both of these. I know all 2 of you will be holding your breath.

The demo sounds delicious...

I tried a couple of the UA sims and did not like them at all. Maybe it's because I own the amps I'm playing models of. I would rather have a decent amp.

Don't disagree - and definitely not arguing that point. I own a couple of great tube amps right now - and have owned several others over the years - including a vintage Plexi Super Lead (sold that 30 years ago - wish I hadn't simply for $$ appreciation factor).

But for my purposes of wanting to quickly get great tones put down to my various song ideas I find this technology amazing. I'm not critical of anyone's opinion - but in my view this technology is affordable and is extremely convenient in terms of getting tones close to the real deal without the ground-shaking volumes and the periodic maintenance of the real amps. It goes without saying that none of us are ever going to own a Dumble. It isn't here yet - arrives tomorrow I think - but assuming it's as good as the Lion (which I own) and the Dream (which I've tried but do not own) - that's as close as I'm going to get. I think UA has done a great job with these things. And I've had the Strymon Iridium for years now and it is also excellent.

I run all these modeler/simulation hardware units through a digital mixer and then amplified by my Mackie HR824's. Sounds killer to my ears.

Maybe I'm just easy to please. :D

I just got my Strymon Iridium, now I have to buy an Enigmatic? I don't think I'll bit. I've come close to buying the VHT D-50, which is supposed to be similar to the Dumble 183, but I've passed. I've got 5 working tube amps, plus a Peavey Transformer amp that I don't use any more. I REALLY don't need another amp.

That said, I am really curious about how I would like the "Dumble sound". I know what the recorded sound is like but that's not necessarily what I would sound like .

If it works for you that's great. I use sims sometimes to get ideas down. I've never (aside from when I had a Firebird X on loan) gotten a 'great' sound from one. They sound ok, but IMHO the UA Deluxe was unusable. Guitar Rig is pretty good, the new version especially, and the Tonex is kind of cool.

I just don't hear anything like the amps I'm used to - they always sound different, are too gainy, etc. Maybe it's because I tend to look for cleaner sounds. For gain I think they work better.

I ordered this thing from Sweetwater just 2 days ago and it arrived this morning a day ahead of what FedEx was indicating.

Just spent about an hour and a half with it just tweaking knobs and running through the presets with both my gold top LP and one of my strats. First impression is very good. Just like with my first session with the Lion - I got lost in tonal bliss there for a while. Of course I've never played through the real deal - so I don't have first hand experience to compare it to like I did with the Lion. But I didn't buy this so that I would have a "Dumble" in my stable necessarily. I was hoping for a new tonal palette to choose from for home recording.

That was super fun. It sounds killer. This thing sings.

I'm running it through my home recording setup. Guitar---> Enigmatic--->Tascam digital mixer--->Mackie HR824's.

The three things that really stand out to me so for are all things I've heard about the Overdrive Special: killer note articulation even with ample amounts of breakup, super tight bass/low-end, and incredible sustain.

Yeah, so.... very happy so far. :thumbs up:

That's awesome!
Makes me want to dig up some Dumble profiles...

Cheers,

I’ve thought about this one. I have their Ruby, and LOVE it. My main two amps are a Fuchs ODS 50, and a DRRI that Andy modded to ODS layout/sound. So, since I have my “Dumble” sounds, and Vox sounds covered, I’m thinking pretty hard about adding the UA Lion to the collection.

I can vouge for the Lion. It is very impressive in terms of it delivering what it was designed for.
