Been sampler/sequencer shopping for a minute... I am looking for a good piece of hardware that performs both of these functions. Initially my thoughts were go with the 2000xl.. but after reading about it, how the sound is rather thin and not so strong build quality... then I read into the 3000, which most love, but at $1700+ isnt cheap...would like the 4000 some day, when I have the cash and if it turns out to be good.... then read about the 60... which I see some on ebay for $500, dont know if they go for more than that by the end of the auctions..

which right now is looking like a potential purchase for me. The differences between it and the 3000 are, as I understand:

1. 12 bit instead of 16.... not a problem, good for that older sound anyway

2. no digital in/out- fine, dont need it anyway

3. no effects, other than delay and attack... but most say that the effects on newer mpc's are almost useless anyway.

4. Less memory... this MIGHT be a problem- what is the maximum memory these can have?? I wont be sampling entire songs, so I dont need a lot of sampling time, probably just chopping stuff, maybe a few short loops here and there.. but as far as sequencing, the sequencer on my keyboard (roland jx-305) has run out of memory while programming even doing 16 bar loops...so I need something that has high sequencing capabilities... does the low ram put such limits on sequencing?

If there is any other differences or things I should know please point them out.... few other questions:

- Hows the sequencer? I need a good sequencer, I have a new computer which I am planning on learning ACid and Reason on, but I'd like to have a piece of hardware that can do it.... is it as good a sequencer as the 2000 and 3000?

- Roger Linn/ OS upgrade... read that with the OS upgrade it operates the same as a 3000... where do I get the OS from and does it cost anything?

-SCSI upgrade... how much $$$? Is a zip or hard drive easy to install?

Thanks

dood. i owned a mpc2000xl. the problem i had with it was that i spent 1000 on it, then i needed a zip drive to save any friggin samples, an extra 200 bucks. plus you need instruments to sample. also if you want to make good tracks, youll probably need a keyboard for midi.

the sampler is easy and good. same with the sequencing, but to load or save any good samples you need the zip or cd drive.

i sold mine and bought the triton le. 1429 usd it can sequence, sample, and its got the triton keyboard synth (one of the best synths) so basically i only need to sample for fun, plus the strings and bass on the triton are good. you can edit all the sounds, to get fresh sounds, and its just as easy as the mpc2000xl.

go with a keyboard workstation unless you got the dough to fork out for a keyboard and the mpc. peace.

also you do need more memory if you really want to use it. when you really get into the sampling, which it what the thing is meant for, you need more memory. otherwise you have to save the samples to disk, then restart to do more sampling. it gets real frustrating when you have to worry about memory.

wonderful

I've used it for Hip Hop, the 60's are great.

I'd rather get either that, 3000 or if I was ballin' the 4000!

i have the mpc2000xl and i happy with it. bec of price i chose it over the 3000. after comparing the both the 3000 has a fatter sound and if i had a choice i would have gotten it. i read a lot about the 4000 which i cant afford, but if i could i wouldnt get it right now. i would at least wait til they work the bugs out

thanks
