Traitorous Usurper
Just curious as to what people think. It seems like vocals are the hardest thing to do properly and I'm wondering if it comes across as "half-assed" to some of you, or that it just isn't enough of a completed song to bother with. I've got most of an album done with my band, but I haven't put any vocals on it yet...mostly because I'm expected to do the majority of the singing (since I wrote the lyrics) and I'm honestly dreading it. For a home studio "know-nothing" guy, I'm fairly proud of what the mixes sound like so far, only to know that I eventually have to step up and bring the yelling.

Thoughts?

Well, this was going to be a poll, but that didn't work so well. So talk to me.

Lets hear a clip dude.
I could give a damn if it dosent have vocals.

Oh, don't worry, I'll be throwing something up here at some point soon. Just more curious about the general consensus.

Hmmm...I'm a fan of great lyrics and good singing, so I definitely gravitate toward songs with vocals. However, if the lyrics and singing suck, it takes away from what otherwise might be a decent song, musically. Likewise, instrumentals can be either inspiring, or excruciating.

In general (based on a fair amount of listening on this board and others), I think most home recorders lack the ability to churn out really interesting instrumentals. Most of it just ends up as mindless wanking. It takes a fair amount of compositional and performance skill/talent to make an instrumental piece compelling. To convey an idea, or a series of ideas, entirely through musical elements is difficult. That's why great composers are so revered.

Now, I think you are really asking about pieces that will have vocals, but you just haven't recorded them yet. Again, this is a tough one. If the song is unfinished without the vocals, it's going to sound unfinished. Listening through 16 measures of guitar strumming where the verse should be is just boring. At the very least, I would track a lead instrument to represent the vocal melody.

It's your birthday, so your post is right...

:p

(Happy Birthday Scrubs)

Good comments, Scrubs. I'm coming from a prog and metal background, so music like that can be interesting to me whether there's singing or not. An Indigo Girls instrumental, on the other hand...
