Macle, as always this stuff is unbelievable. I loved everything about this one (as well as all your others). I've made my own "Macle" CD. I get the comments about the masking and the business and too much stuff in the mix, but I hope you don't change a thing. I love it that way. That's what gives it that Macle sound. I had no problem picking out anything, and you still get this really nice overall blend. Ya know, nothing is sticking out by itself, it's all kinda ONE BIG SOUND. I really like that. I know I've told you before, but if you really want an example of what you sound like, check out the Rembrandts. Best pop stuff around. They use a cello sometimes too.

Twist

P.S. the ride cymbal sounds awsome!

hey, Macle,

is it just me or you are actually a bit cynical lately.

Al

Oops, is it showing? Sorry about that. :) I've downloaded your movie! I'll find your thread...

Cool. You wanna send one to tubedude? He wants one.

Alright, thanks! I guess one deaf guy's blurry is another golden eared guy's really nice blend. :) I do sort of go for that, to be honest. I played it for Max (my girlfriend and bandmate) for the first time yesterday (you guys heard it before she did!) Anyway, she thought it was pretty cool, and I thought it was alright, too. Out of all our "duet" type ones, this one actually makes me cringe the least! So I'll probably tweak the mix a bit, see how it goes, without changing it too much.

Thanks vey much Twist!

Macle

hey man, cool to see you posting a new song.

definitely sounds good to me...did you do a lot of your "mastering" stuff like you did with that joke test one time? Or is this mostly like, dry tracks + mixing/eq?

I've been listening to a lot of more basic, indie shit lately (like "modest mouse")...so, i'm not as jumpy on the "pop" songs as I used to be...

Still, this is the stuff. vaporware cd..hehe. love it.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I think you kind of HAVE to look at the clinic that way to remain sane and have any fun here. If 8 out of 10 people are bitching about something, it can be helpful to know it, but on something like this, where some people like it and some don't, hell,...that's just pretty much the definition of music, eh?

BTW - 9 out off 10 homereccors think my vocals are too loud. Are they "right?"...I dunno'...doesn't bug me, lol. :D :D

Oh sure, they're on fucking Sony, and we're recording in our goddamn bedroom, and giving our crap away for free, and they're all cool and "indie", and we're over-produced pop sellouts!!!

Hmmm, guess I am a bit cynical these days. :)

Hey Wes, how have you been? No, I didn't do any "mastering" on this one at all. Do you think it's better that way, or worse? Thanks a lot for checking it out. (I guess the buzz is over :( )

Chris-I'm just joking around you know. It is interesting when there are completely opposite opinions. But don't worry, I know it's ultimately up to me to decide what's what. I wouldn't be doing a remix if I didn't think there was some truth to the blurriness. I think those electrics led me down a path that hopefully I can fix or improve a bit, without changing the whole deal too much. Thanks :).

Macle

OK. Interesting poll kinda thing. Who do YOU (anyone) think here deserves to be on a label :)

Good stuff btw (as I've said before :D)

Yeah, aint image a bitch? heh. well they are pretty talented in a weird kinda way :) When I say indie in their context...I really just mean lofi. You're still the indie dream Macle - just sell 20,000 records or so and you'd be set!

Your sound works perfectly for your songs which are perfectly good. But hey I'm not kissing your ass here, this song is good...no doubt album worthy - but it's no "IWSOWYO", or "So Long" ;)

No, I didn't do any "mastering" on this one at all. Do you think it's better that way, or worse? Thanks a lot for checking it out. (I guess the buzz is over :( )

Well the only reason I asked about the mastering, is that I thought this had a good in your face sound to it - but I didn't think you did the mastering. So I think it just shows how you've come along with your mixes - versus when you did Joke, you had to do the mastering stuff on it to give it that bigger more even sound, but now you're able to get that more naturally.

Like, you are getting the same result...but working smarter not harder, if that makes any sense.

The buzz is definitely not over man, you guys are still stars in my heart. Why not just go out and play some damn coffee shop acoustic gigs...I know you don't want to scale it down like that, but fuck man...people have gotten up and running with far less talent than you guys have. Fuck putting together a band and getting a manager and blah blah blah. In my experience, that's the kind of thing that weighs people down. You picture yourself doing the "small time" show, but it's still 500 people and decent lighting etc. etc. It becomes hard to visualize how to *get* to that point. - just give people a chance to get a glimpse of what you are doing and maybe that will provide the motivation or the contact to take it to the next level. I think you owe that to yourself at this point.

Hell, Jason Mraz started doing Starbucks in San Diego what...a year and a half ago...and now he's starting to break and has a loyal fanbase.

Or you could just pursue your modeling career...

hey, Macle,

I had this idea last night. Dunno if it's possible, but what if I just ask some people in the school's radio station and sneak your songs in there? My firend is in charge for a school TV show, maybe that would work, too.

If we get enough college kids like me on this board to do this, you will start getting requests to play in bars in college towns. Next thing you know, you are on UK MTV! !

appearently this was a wet dream:D :D

but, seriously, whenever I listen to So Long (cuz it's so emotional), I have this urge, "we gotta get this couple out there. Too good for the world to miss this"

Al

Hi Macle!
As always,a real treat when you post something!

You always seem to be able to capture the upbeat hopeful music that made the sixtes great, but with a fresh feel.
Bridge was great!

Perfect match of words and music.

Very nice harmonies.

Cool ending, that Really brings me back.
Time to go go kick the turntable again!:D

Thanks,
Pete

wow... you guys in here are great!! That song rocked. Sounded like an oldies song recorded on modern equipment. the song... performance, recording, etc... amazing! I'm not good enough to really give a critique... only compliments... i also would like to mention that I like the not-digital-home-recording sound you got... and somehow you managed for it to not be too mid-rangy or muddy. great song!

Well let's see. The slightly disharmonied string(?) part at the beginning on the left was a nice touch. Drum mixing is GREAT. I can hear some 70's weirdo guitar effect there. There's a bit of everything here, maybe even too much. I'm not sure. Oh, you used that stop'n'go thing there. I've been hearing that type of stuff lately.

VERY beatles-type at 1:40. Maybe it's just the vocals. And a NICE groove part afterwards. Good job! Maybe there's too much stuff going on, for a 'simple' pop song. And the outro.. hmm... it sounds like you were going for the full-on psycheledic pop effect here. I guess the ending is good, I'm not sure. Very creative use of little things to make a somewhat simple song sound like a "pro" song.

CanopuS- Hey, seems no one wanted to play. I know who'd I vote for, but I'm delusional :). Thanks a lot CanopuS.

Wes-Hey man, you make me larf! Very intuitive, too. I'm gonna be a model! Yay!! Seriously, thanks Wes.

A1A2-Hi Al, that would be cool. If you can do that, then go for it, if just to get people's reactions. If not, don't worry about it. I appreciate the thought. Btw, don't know if you saw, but I posted on your film thread. In brief: great!

Pete-Thanks a lot, Pete. This one, the lyrics actually match the upbeatness of the music. Most of the others were actually kind of negative in a way. Thanks!

dctalkdotnet-Thanks very much. Someone said this stuff was "neo-retro" or "neo-hippie", which is cool, I think. Really appreciate the "not digital home recording" comment. Thanks for checking it out!

So this does sound pro!! I knew it! I'm not delusional after all.

Thanks CrankyOne.

Macle,

yeah, I saw your post, thanks for checking it out. To answer your question there, the program I used was Macromedia's Director, music done in Sonar, and a 35mm camera.

My school is pretty dead right now since it's summer, I will try get your stuff played when fall semester starts again.

take care

Al

Excellent clarity and separation of all the elements. How do you do that?

Great arrangement and vocal performances. The song itself is good, but not my favourite of yours.

I think the snare drum is a little too "muffled" sounding - I'd like to hear a wee bit more "snap".

The vocal sound is not quite right, but I can't put my finger on it. The vocals sound "separate" from the rest of the mix. Reverb? Too much EQ? Don't know. Whatever it is, you should definitely turn up the vocals a touch.

The outro and ending is very cool.

Great stuff as always, macle. I've concentrated on the negatives because the positives would take too long. ;)

Cheers

AB

Yow, this is nicely done. Great writing and production. Hadn't discovered your stuff yet, will be keeping a closer eye in the future.

Hey macle,
You know, yours was the first music that i got into when i first hit this place a coupla years ago. ....still lush and happy. Great toon here man..... and very nice recording as usual.

my gosh

Simply awsome. You really get everything perfect and I admire your songs alot. This is one of those tunes you keep spinning over and over. I will crank it up loud tonight. I really enjoyed the section around 230 with strings, accoustic guitar and female voice. Gerogeous backing. Nice.

Cheers

Erland

listening on lo-fi it, was a very well written tune and all the parts were fitted nicely. I really enjoyed the presentation of it. I did wonder if the stop-times were gonna go all the way thru the tune though. Very good playing and singing. I learn...

How did this pass me by?

Got nothing else to say but: 'hell, this rocks!'

You're the new king of pop, Macle!

Excellent!

I put together a CD a few months ago of "home recording people" and I have one of your songs on it, it's called "I Want Some" I believe. Great tune and now I know who to give claim to...

This new song is great as well, it'll be going on Vol 2 :)
