Oooo...fantastic song! On my monitors I'm wanting just a little more low mids. Seems just a little bit brittle...mostly in the vocals. I've been recording for a couple hours now though. I'm not a good judge there probably.
Hopefully you got what you needed from others, but I can at least say I really dug the tune!

Amazing..You rule Macle-Excellent arranging-parts popping in and out. I like the way you use tambourine to take the pressure off the drums. Nice full sound-really well written song. Vocals seem to have some competition here and there-not sure by what-maybe the string patch on the synth?? Outstanding. You ever worked in a studio? You could prob work wonders in a big time studio.

Man, this place has really taken off. I remember when I first posted here, way back in the day, there was hardly anyone here in the clinic. But I digress...

Herm-Thanks Herm! I was sort of going for a more radio ready sound, so I do take that as a good thing. And I especially appreciate the not digital thing, cuz I've tried hard to avoid that. I use Paris, and that may help a lot, I believe it is a different sort of DAW. Thanks again.

crawdad-Great post, thanks! I was actually thinking of Elton John when I said that. I am a big fan of his and his productions (the newer ones and the older ones). So many of those tracks are amazing because they are so full with full orchestras and everything, and he plays the piano often in a busy and rhythmic way, but they sound so good and dynamic. I read an interview with Gus Dudgeon (who produced the old ones) not long ago in a recording mag (shortly before he died). His methods were really interesting and so foreign to me. He wasn't tweaking things on a computer screen, that's for sure!

The Steve Miller song, I'm not familiar with, I'll have to check it out.

I've started on a remix, hopefully I'll improve it, and hopefully, it won't take as long as the first one. Thanks crawdad, really appreciate your feedback.

Sluice-Thanks a lot! It's a bit poppy, but I can't seem to help that lately. I have started on a remix, and heeded the advice so far, and i think the clarity and fullness of the vocals will be improved a lot. If you do have any specific EQing tips, that would be great, I know you know what you're doing in that department.

Good challenge thing, btw. I was thinking a good one would be to have everyone mix the same song/tracks (maybe this has been done already). Maybe just a simple song, guitar, bass, and drums, or something. And then share the specifics of how they EQd and stuff.

Thanks, glad you liked the tune!

Stratomaster-Hi, how are you! Thanks a lot. I've never worked in a real studio. Would be great, though I wouldn't really know what to do. Would be kind of intimidating, I think. You see those pictures of those mixing boards in big studios, and they look like NASA, and you think, man, what the frick is all that? Thanks again!

Macle

gosh, i so wanna hear this tune. Been crossing my fingers for awhile now:)

For some reason, when I download it, i only get the first 30 seconds of it, and the download time is really slow. Probably just NW.com.

Anyway, BUMP

Al

ok, after downloading it for 30 times, I've finally got the full version of the song!!

like everyone else has said, the breaks are awsome, especially the instrumental part around 2:30, that's really the highlight of the song in my opinion, however, I wish it would last a little bit longer and have the drums pick up a little slower. Maybe have the drum kicks in slow/lighter, and let it build up for a little longer.

This part is really something new that I've heard from you, Macle. Your stuff is usually very, ummm.."at the moment"? I can't think of a better term. You know, you play the song, dance to it, and enjoy the very moment/place, but this song actually takes you somewhere else cuz of those cool instrumental breaks. I guess people call those space rock, and this one has a little touch on that, I think, which totally rocks! It's good to hear some diversity in your stuff.

I will listen to this song more, and post back later.

Good job, man!!

ps. BTW, thanks for those priceless tips on song writing awhile ago:)

Al

Always a pleasure.
I agree that you should be touring, you could have a fan base that is huge.
Go, be a star. Say hi to us sometimes.

By the way... where did the strings come from? Are those samples of some type or are you actually playing the shit? I wouldnt doubt it.
I need you on my team. You could smooth out my edges, and I could give your smoothness some edge. :)
Peace...
check your email...

Ok, so I know I havn't been around here for a while too and they'll say (chrisharris) Im only here cause macle's got something to show and why arn't you listening to our songs too. But I really just happened to look in and had to hear this.

macle, this sounds like your putting all your eggs or sounds or tricks in every song. I don't mean that in a bad way. Its just that after hearing this I had to play some of your earlier stuff too. Love it. Love it all. When ever I listen to one of your songs its a great experience. You really do put in an amazing effort every time. Its just that on listening to them all, I was starting to hear the same sounds and progressions all the time. You're mixes are also very similar. Fucking awsome too. Actually Im just jealous.
You need to move all your gear into a different room. You son of a beatle you.

Scott

Nice to meet you :)

Anyway I indeed like it like everyone else. Excellent stuff. So whats new.

Sounds like someone likes the beatles ;)

Incidently I do think its slightly on the blurry side of things.
Interesting end. What exactly are the instruments, they kinda blur a bit. Sorry :(

Nice stuff though :)

Nice tune, sounds great. Song is kinda overly pop'ish but that's just personal opinion, I mean it is pop! Excellent guitar sounds. Cool ending 'schools out completly.......' :D

Rock on Macle.

A1A2-Hi Al! Thanks. Sorry you had such a hard time getting the song. I thought switching to Nowhere from that Angelfire page would cure that. That's cool that you think some of this song seems new, as I was thinking it's the same ol rubbish! Btw, I tried downloading your movie a while back, and it took forever, and than there was nothing, but, like 1 second! What is it with this internet?! I'll try again hopefully soon. Thanks again.

tubedude-Howdy! Go be a star?! Ummm, okay. The strings are samples unfortunately, though a while back I nearly got a cello! Still hope to, would be fun to try and layer it a bunch. Got your email, will reply shortly. Thanks a lot!

Scott-Good to 'see' you! Who is chris harris? Someone from this board? Anyway, yeah, I know what you mean, it's the same ol rubbish! I was actually trying to do it the same, as this song is supposed to go on that CD that never was. So, trying to keep it somewhat unified, though maybe crossed the line into "this crap all sounds the same." Thanks very much for the effort comment, it really is exhausting doing this stuff, and there are many moments when I wonder why I bother. I know what you mean about moving into a different room, definitely looking forward to a change. Let's see, which period of The Beatles should I rip off next? Maybe the Hamburg sound!

CanopuS-Hi, nice to meet you! Yes, The Beatles are not bad. I guess it's a bit blurry. I, too, am sorry about that. What are the instruments? I didn't think it was that blurry! It's mainly car horn and flute. Thanks a lot for checking it out! :)

Emeric-Hi, how are you? Too popish, I know. I think the male/female vocal makes it even more so, but I figure if we did more serious stuff, it might seem really cornball, at least to me, anyway. Hope to do something sometime that's a bit more serious and stark, like the way you do that stripped down sort of Plastic Ono Band thing. Love that. Thanks ver much!

Macle

Any tips on the mix, or the song, or anything else, greatly appreciated.
Your not famous yet:confused: Hey macle, "David" here remember me? Ha! I thought not! Hey bro wished I could help ya but you've heard my mixes in the past so..Sounds fine to me though. I think this tune is really really great man..and I mean that, but it's B side stuff compared to your earlier tunes imho, just didn't grab me as hard...but it's still way way over my head man so don't take that in a bad way. "Beautiful Loser" still runs thru my head every now and then, that tune is hitsville imo. All your tunes are great man! Big thanks..

macle,

Sounded really good, but then my turntable broke at the end, and the song slowed to a stop. Must be the belt. Even my Shure V-15 type 35 didn't help.

Other than that, man what a great song, recording, and performance!!!

You owe me one turntable belt.

Great work!!!

GT

Incidently what I posted wasn't meant as a negative comment. I actually love it and listened to it about....5 times I think now. Anyway, enjoy, tell us when your next ones out :)

macle, a cello ay. Do it man. Do it. And do it any way that works. You'll have an absolute ball. The sexiest sounding instrument......ever.
What I mean by do it any way that works is, well I did the same thing with the violin. Now a violin player I certainly aint. Thats for sure. I couldn't hold it under my chin properly and my wrist was so painfully twisted trying to get my fingers on the strings and when you look down the neck its only about an inch high at that angle and its fucking loud right next to your ear too. Sooooo, what im getting at is I tried playing it like a cello. Not by resting it on the floor cause its too short. But by resting it on my knee. And because its facing away from me (cello style) I've actuall cheated big time by putting dots on the side of the fingerboard that corespond to 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th fret using my guitar tuner to find the positions. Now I can comfortably move around the neck and easily pitch notes. You wont have the same problem with a cello because its already in a comfortable position. But you should definately cheat with the dots like I did. These instruments are the most dificult to master of them all and unless your playing them 4 hours a day for ever, you'll have a hard time pitching notes. And make sure you record them in a bright reflective room.

Oh and, Chrisharris is the coolest wise guy here. He takes the piss out of himself more than us. And contributes a lot of good stuff around here.

Scott...

Wow. I have nothing to add, it's all been said. But I downloaded and listened, and I'll be damned if I'll let my post count slide just cos I have nothing new to say...

Can't really speak to the sound quality, as I was having PC problems last night (and am posting from work now, listening to $12 speakers), but this was stellar. Sort of a flashback sound, but very crisp, great writing and arranging. I thought the voices were a bit nasal, but that DOES help them cut through and claim their space. Also really makes them stand out on a transistor radio (like anyone has those anymore).

And yeah, I thought Beatles, too, but the voices were different - unique, but reminiscent of someone else - Grass Roots? Buckinghams? Hollies? I disremember.

Anyhow, an excellent effort, and it goes into my keepers folder. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Daf

I can`t add anything that hasn`t already been said. It did bring some fond memories of many years ago of the Monkees, Small faces, and The Beattuls.. although it is a new sound that many have never heard I`m sure.

freshears-David, you changed your name. Of course I remember you, you've got the fantastic rock n roll voice. Ironic you like Beautiful Loser, cuz that one's not going on this vaporware CD. That one was a little solo number. Thanks a lot for checking this one out, appreciate it!

GT-Hey man, thanks! Sorry about your victrola, try it on your 8-track player.

CanopuS- I was just joking around, so all's good! Thanks very much.

Scott-That's funny, playing the violin like a minature cello. Good idea about putting the dots on. I really want to give it a try. There were cellos for sale on Ebay for real cheap, but I didn't get one. Cheap cellos are apparently really bad, as decent ones go for thousands. Still, maybe I'll get one just to mess around. Thanks.

dafduc-Thanks a lot! Hopefully, with a remix, I can make the vocals a little fuller. Though, in a way, the cutting through aspect, and the thinness, does, I think, add to the sort of light hearted poppiness and retroness of the song.
Thanks again!

Toki987-Alright, thanks a lot! The Monkees!! Now, that is cool. Appreciate it.

Macle

hey, Macle,

is it just me or you are actually a bit cynical lately. Cheer up, your stuff always rock!!:D

About a cello, why not rent one from a local shop or something. My roommate rented one for a semester, and it wasn't very expensive as I recall. But that thing is one tough instrument to master for sure.

about my lil movie, did you right click and save as? only the 200x300 version works BTW. But you need media player tho if you're on a mac. give it another try when you get a chance:

take care

Macle, as always this stuff is unbelievable. I loved everything about this one (as well as all your others). I've made my own "Macle" CD. I get the comments about the masking and the business and too much stuff in the mix, but I hope you don't change a thing. I love it that way. That's what gives it that Macle sound. I had no problem picking out anything, and you still get this really nice overall blend. Ya know, nothing is sticking out by itself, it's all kinda ONE BIG SOUND. I really like that. I know I've told you before, but if you really want an example of what you sound like, check out the Rembrandts. Best pop stuff around. They use a cello sometimes too.

Twist

P.S. the ride cymbal sounds awsome!
