it is a good sounding mic. seeing that i have a tlm103 i can say it sounds better, because it does. for $299 its a good deal, i think. i got the mic for christmas, i started using it on a project i'm working on now, it could just be the m20 preamp, but the mic sounds real good. the lower se's, i can't say, bayview is giving them away... but i think i'm going to get the z3000 just to try. if it doesn't sound as good as i thought i'll just sel it or send it back...i'm waiting on the price sheet for the z mics

Per a prior post I would infer that the SE mics, as well as the mic on eBay, are re-branded Chinese 797Audio or some such. As always, what matter is how it sounds to you. I would recommend that you pay extra for support, which is a big reason I favor Marshall or Studio Projects.

I'll take your word for it, if they good...go for it! I just opened the page for the 3000 and it looks just like a Soundelux mic. Maybe its just to darn early in the morning! Anyway, you'e got not arguement with me. If it works, it works!

c9, if the SE sounds better, let me buy you another one and you can send me the TLM103........

The SE mics come from an offshoot of the Fielo factory in Shanghai. The 797 factory is in Beijing. They're not the same mics at all.

I have an SE5000 that I bought from Michael at Bayview and it is a bright tube mic that compresses rather nicely at high volumes and is designed to look a lot like an AKG c12 (which apparently is bright, too -- no I'm not trying to imply the SE5000 sounds "just like a c12") It's useful when you want to record something that must cut through a mix and I've gotten good results on acoustic rhythm guitar. Fair to great results on vocals -- depending on the voice, and some really excellent acoustic bass sounds.

However NEVER use one of these on a solo acoustic instrument or when narrating spoken word with no background SFX or music. Too bright.

That being said, I've not yet tried any of their other mics. Curious about the SE1 small diaphragm cardioid.

Also, I've gotten great service from Bayview and they've accommodated special requests with grace and class.

i actually put it in our joint studio and my partner chris wants it. he's gonna give me $650 for it. for the hell of it i'm gonna try the z3000. don't down a product that you've never used :) i never liked presonus for some reason, after i got to use the m20 preamp, i came around...

Kelly Dueck, what type of mic pre do you have on your se5000? i also find that the mic is kinda bright.

i didnt down it...i just thought id do you a favor.......:D

I have an SE5000 and it has a great vintage sound. Cool on vocals and acoustic guitar. It does sound much better compressed and more vintage also. It can have a little too much siblance on vocals but some slow compression seems to help that.

I use the pres on my Aardvark pro 24/96 as well as those on my Soundcraft M8 mixer (which uses pre-amps originally designed for the Ghost line of consoles)

I got some really good acoustic bass guitar sounds (Mariachi band) with the SE5000 using the Soundcraft with it's spdf out straight into a Teac cd burner ... (damn that Soundcraft is a nice little mixer!)

This mic needs to warm up first, as well.

all tube mics need to warm up.
last night i ran a session with the se5000 and a akg solid tube, i can tell which is which mixing on the mackie monitors.

Did you mean to say you CAN'T tell the difference between the SE5000 and the SolidTube? That would be remarkable ... and hard to believe.

naw, i hear a slight difference in the two, it could have been the placement of the mics in the booth, but they both sounded very good. today we recorded with only the solid tube, tomorrow i'm only gonna setup the se5000, after final mix and everything, i'ma see if someone other than me could tell which mic is which. the se5000 sounds great on that m20, and even better on the avalon i used last month.

I never realized compression can be used to tame siblances. And to think, I've been using a de-esser all this time. Man, do I feel stupid.

This thread is starting to emit this familiar smell . . . kind of like this processed meat product that I used to see in my cubbard as a kid.

Don't let it get you down, bro, we all learn new things sometimes.
