for putting you to sleep... longest file posted... biggest bandwidthhog... whatever

WARNING

1. this is readings from the Bible... if you can't tolerate that...cya next time.
2. this is a 19 1/2 minute presentation w/narration... if you can't tolerate that (or parts of it), cya next time.
3. Unless you have DSL or can stream this, I wouldn't bother as it is a 18 mg file....pretty big to D/L.

The song is Genesis

This is straight out of the King James version with background music. This is intended for young audiences or people that like to occasionally slip on some headphones and enjoy ambient style music.

I guess after all this disclaimer I might get a listen or two out of the 20,000+ members here;)

I'd say it might start off slow, but then maybe not. If you dare to spend the time listening, I'll let you judge for yourself. It does get a little more upbeat around the 10 min mark or so...

mp3mkr,

Sounds like that some woman who's been in your past mixes. Now, is this your performance -- your music? Or is it just your mix? Is the narration something you engineered, too?

Some type of slide show, or video set to this soundtrack... could see that happening.

The sounds after "The Fourth Day" seem a little more expen$ive than your Roland stuff. New Tritone? :p There's a small audio glitch in the narration track right there, before she begins speaking again. (Before "The Fifth Day").

Compression is well used on this narration; sounds like the track is right against my ears, but its not overbearing.

After "The Sixth Day"... the organ flourish sounds cheap to me... just "smallish", or "cheap"... too "midi" or something.

She starts talking about "Eden" and the music starts picking up (9:45)... I've never heard this version of the bible.... giving names of rivers  Is this narration based on the bible... or is it just a direct reading? Little of both?

"She shall -- m -- be called woman" ... she messed up the narration there (about 13:50).

The tree is all of the sudden in the middle of the garden? Never heard this version, nope. Sounds like an interpretation.

Nice guitar sounds come in around 18:00...

The music does help the narration flow pretty well... Good content... helps with the imagination. This should be put on one of those lil cassette things (well... they were cassettes when I was young) with a book that the kids could follow. Impressive that you were able to create music that doesn't get boring, that provides a good backdrop for this story, for about 20 minutes.

I'll hit this later...

ok Chad...I guess you are off the shit list for replying first.. (shuffles feet, etc...kicks dust...)

Yes, my narrator read out of the King James Bible, and I did all the music. She just read, if she made a mistake, backed up a bit and started in again. Then it was off to the editing foray!! But actually, over 20 minutes she really only stopped just a couple little times... but really, she didn't read that long. I put in A LOT of spaces between her readings.

Thanks mucho for the listen.. I'll have to go check the specific areas you mentioned. Thanks for the 'close ear'

so sabb.... think I'll delete the thread eh?? HA! you wish!!!

" It does get a little more upbeat around the 10 min mark or so..."
lol, dl'ing now...

right on dude! Nicely done. The girl speaking was enjoyable to listen to. Backdrop was great. The stuff going on behind the scenes during the "...and they felt no shame..." I had to laugh because it sounded so cheeky.

I had no problem listening to the whole thing. I've actually never read Genesis so I'm glad you posted this.

Very cool! A lot of work went into this. It reminded me a lot of my wife's Bible on CD that she has (with music and sound effects) but I think I like your speaker better. It has that "Book on Tape" feel to it and works well, especially with headphones.

I like the instrumentation especially when it kicks in around the 9:50 mark or so. I haven't read this book (Genesis) in a long time, so it was a good refresher.

Pretty cool! I can't think of any mix stuff, but it was an enjoyable 19 minutes.

:D

Having quite a bit of experience in bible reading...

Your inserted pauses are too frequent and long. You might not think so as a musician, but from the standpoint of 'is this an effective presentation of Genesis 1' they disrupt the narrative flow.

It was kind of odd that you put both the first and second story of creation in the same recording. They have contradictions and different themes so they would usually be presented separately.

Your narrator is quite evidently much more comfortable with the second story of creation, particularly the garden of eden, than she is with the narrative of the first story of creation. It is a frequent mistake to present it with lots of ponderous importance, which is not what is most unique about Genesis. Most creation stories in ancient cultures either had creation the unexpected progeny of a wild tryst between the main male and female deity or the leftovers from some divine combat. Genesis 1 uniquely portrays creation as a deliberate methodical creative act out of a desire to make something good. That frames creation in a different light and, mankind 'in his image' also wants to create something lasting and good.

And on the first day God said 'lets have a bass track'. And there was a bass track. And God saw that the bass track was good. Then God said 'lets add some horns...'

..can't understand that - you're warning as it would be porn or something - well, it's just a reading from the most selled book in the world!

I just hat 5min time to listen, but it is very easy to listen - she has the perfect voice for narrations. Overall it's like listening to ambient music.

cheers

wow...you are really right. You have to look at this as NOT being a musician, and I see what you mean.

I put the two parts together, because they just happened that way, and I DID originally want separate tracks. I am still trying to figure out a way to 'effectively' do that.

again...set me straight again. thanks.. you're 1000% correct. I guess it is the part of me that everyone says needs to act "more Christian:rolleyes: " coming out in me.

boydrj and DougH.... thanks for the listen. I really appreciate the time you spent with the comments too. Boydrj... anxious to get our colab going!

What's the chain on her voice over? Very "wet" but no sybalance.

re20 into a Fender mx5200 console (kinda like a 1604 Mackie), into a Layla 20 and no EQ and just a tad of Ren compressor... oh and a pop filter... all about 12 inches from her mouth. homemade cables too..about 25 yrs old:eek: Probably a couple of sends on some reverbs too. I use about 2-3 as a minimum on most vocals....like a room, another room, and then just a little longer decay'd stuff to help fill it out. Yeah..ask Tex if I like reverb!I've got 4 channels basically always 'wired' into my monitor system at any one time.

ha!...you would have "gotten a kick" outta what they did in our school systems around here a couple years back. ...They took all the science books and glued the pages together describing the "big bang" theory. I kid you not!

I couldn't reply to this last night due to the atmosphere..

I thought this was great for what it is.. she does have a great voice for this that makes it easy to listen to.. the sound was good but there were quite a few spots were I heard audible distortion on the vocal.. yeah there were a few synth patches that sounded a little cheap, but most of them were perfect.. this goes with 'Trust'? cool.. I read what was said about some of the pauses and I agree.. I thought it was marking seperate sections or something.. Either way it was a great listen..

It's funny that someone tried so hard to one star this thread.. (I wonder who?) When I rest the mouse over the stars it says '15 votes.' Probably 13 of those were from one person.. I voted 5 stars.. (3 times):D

I know nothing about synths, so no suggestions there. The voice over work sounds pretty crisply recorded, and as someone already said, great job on the lack of sibilance.

how do you go about recording such a long track? do you overdub in sections, or go through full takes?

sabb.. good to see you around. I know how people {tend} to defend their own stuff, and I too noticed the distortion on the vocals... plus the background noise went up... all when I converted this to mp3. I used a pretty fast {vs quality} choice in Wavelab, and noticed that the artifacts then happened. I also kept it at 128kbps. Enough for the defense... there may well be some distortion there, but on my CD's that I make, there is none, as I have listened to this many times on headphones, speakers, etc, and haven't caught any. But on the CD, I was a bit more conservative with my levels too.

oh...and this thread is on a different star rating too.

two is the most you can get (= excellence!!), and if you get less than two or more than two, it depends on other factors, but TWO is the magic number here!!!;)

powderfinger... this was one large session/track. The vocals were really only two tracks (one for the main narration), and if she goofed, she just backed up a bit and I started her up on another track. I really didn't have any punch-ins, so to speak, as she could go for a good amount before she would just "back up" a bit and continue on.

As far as synths (which the entire music bed was composed of), there probably weren't really more than 5 or so at any one time too. At times, just one or two, actually.

So...the total session was a 20 minute multitrack session (in Cooleditpro) with about 7 tracks running. Nothing at all tough for my 'lil Pentium 233 to handle at all! This way seemed to be the easiest to do btw, as you could very easily see where you were looking at the .wav files.
thx for the listen
