Whats the best RAP MIC??!
Hey everyone. I have been off and on here for a while but I built a small studio in my basement which has taken up all my time. It seems like every step I take forward, I take 2 backwards. The latest problem is that I got a brand new HP DV8t laptop to do all my recording and mixing on. I use REAPER...Anyways, I had to buy a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable to use the fp10 and it came today after 2 weeks wait. I installed the driver and did what I was told and while my computer recoognizes the fp10, it does not sync with it. I cannot get REAPER to recognize anything after I click on the fp10 under ASIO. It does not let me change the input values nor the output values. The firepod seems to work because when i put on headphones that are plugged into it, and talk into the mic, I hear it. It just won't sink up with the laptop...If anyone could please tell me something I could try because my worst fear is that the firewire card in the hp does not match up to that of the firepods. This would basically leave me screwed because I am not going to open up my computer, and because it is a laptop, I cant just throw in a TI PCI card. =[. Thanks guys and take care

This might be a silly question, but does the FP10 show up anywhere under the hardware manager in Windows? Which version of Windows are you using? Just a couple of things that we might need to help us point you in the right direction.;)

I feel your pain. I have had all kinds of setbacks, incompatabilities, blah, blah, blah! Anyway, don't get discouraged. It doesn't sound like a show stopper yet.

I am not familar with Reaper (I use Sonar) but it sure sounds like there is just a missing or wrong setting. Check that the sample rate and bit depth in reaper and the FP10 are the same. Could be that simple.

Also, there is probably a setting as to what sets the midi clock (internal, external, etc.)

Dig into stuff like this and I'm sure you will find the problem.
Good luck!

I am running windows 7. When I plug in the fp10 is says FP 10 recognized and lets me edit the bit rate, clock, and latency but that is all. But I guess the answer would be yeah, windows does recognize it by its proper name and it says it was installed correctly. Theoretically it should work, but because nothing can go right for me, it obv does not lol

Thanks man. I will take your advice and keep messing around with it until it works.

Yeow, Windows 7. That's a bit out of my territory there. I'm still running XP and I haven't really worked with Vista/7 yet.:(

Hopefully someone running w7 with the firepod comes to reaper chat soon, Ill put it in the topic

Hey, Mikeeb,
sorry for your troubles. What f/w interface are you using?
Curious, because I (use a laptop) purchased the (Mackie) TAPCO 4X6 F/W interface, after I had purchased SONAR HS7 XL. Everything I tried to get them to sync up failed. I researched, asked Q's, ETC. A LOT of time, and then I finally thought about trying out the software that came with my interface. It was Tracktion 2 (Mackie). Well, it had a layout I could understand, and no latency problems. It was syncing fairly good, but there was some problem that made me call tech support - who informed me Tracktion 2 was NOT compatible with Vista. I had to upgrade to Tracktion 3. Since then, all components work together like a charm. So, in essence, I am having to discard the "industry standard" sonar program I purchased, because it doesn't work with my other stuff. But I found an alternative that works really well together. It seems it's very difficult to find someone who has the exact setup, and equipment, so that they can walk you through what needs to be done and how. Mostly, you have to explore what you have - as you've been doing, and do a LOT of research and TIME investment to find the perfect fit for you and your setup!
Don't be discouraged, because when you get the right formula, you will be so pleased to have learned all you did in the process, and you will be able to record your heart out!
Good luck with your endeavors. I hope this helps.

sounds as if its the pci thing which most people have a problem with

check this info out

http://www.presonus.com/media/pdf/hardware_compatibility.pdf

if you have a spare pci slot get the recommended firewire card and it should work. also you could download and try the asioforall driver and use this instead of the presonus drivers.

the fp10 is a great unit when working but presonus should have definitely tested it out on more hardware and operating systems first. i emailed them as i wanted to get a laptop and part of the advise they gave me was that it would work fine with any mac, but if you were getting a windows laptop to have a look at that page (link) i think when i get enough money ill just get a mac, seem to prefer them now anyways

good luck with it mate

oh yeah get the new drivers from the website if you havent already

I had the same problem.(running vista x64) The onboard firewire is about the last priority so ive heard . I got the T.I. No availe .. Still no sync... Returned the Presonus and got a great deal on an M audio 26/26 and all was golden.. Been Recording like a fat bastard ever since...

I went to the link above, and the info said that Presonus won't work with the NEC firewire chipset. I went to Best Buy about a year ago looking for a windows laptop, and every single brand and model that they had had the NEC chipset. This may be your problem. I think all of the manufacturers have gone to the NEC chip except mac.

Also all of the laptops I looked at ran their pci express slot through the NEC chip, so getting a firewire express card with the TI chip would have been risky. I opted for a desktop, and put in a PCI.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for your help. I really do appreciate how kind everyone in this community is..I might just go ahead and buy a new, more reliable interface and sell my fp10 on ebay for what I can get. I have about $500 saved up so hopefully I will have around $650-700 when its all said and done. I figured it would be the firewire card on the HP, even though it was the worst possible outcome from all of this..I know I could use the search button to find out what the best interface I could get for around 800, but I am going to go head and ask if any of you have recommendations. After all, I can not afford to spend 700 and not have it work with the HP laptop because of one little thing. I would like if it could have a good amount of pres, because I usually record with drums with 5 or so mics. I run windows 7 professional and REAPER on a HP, DV8t. If you have any other questions that would allow you to help me better please do..Or if you know a way I could keep the FP10 without having to open up the computer thatd be great. Either way, I appreciate the help. Thanks again.
-Mike

Ok well i just went on ebay and saw that without damaging my computer, I would be willing to do what it takes to get this to work

This is a really deep subject, actually a whole bunch of them, that comes up all the time, but you'd really have to read the lines to get the answers you need. Its such an amazing PITA to get things setup, especially laptops running RICOH, Lucent or NEC chipsets. Its doable, but man....

Why not sell the laptop and get one with a better firewire chipset? Or get a mac? I'm sure you could sell yours for over $1000 depending on the specs. And you could get a very capable Mac for that much.

And if you do sell the FP10, you should be able to get at least $300 for it on ebay.

Thats the problem, its hard to find a laptop with a TI chipset. Not all macs have TI chips, in fact I'm not sure any do at this point. Their decision to go with Lucent/Argere recently didn't seem to make as much of a stir as you would think.

presonus informed me that all their hardware at this point in time works with Mac laptops and desktops
