I have a T5 also and while it is a kickass live guitar, it really doesn't sound acoustic. It is a fabulous sound but very unique. It sounds like the best acoustic impersonator I've ever heard though
It sounds like you don't like it. You can send it to me - really. I wouldn't want you to be stuck there with a guitar that doesn't sound acoustic. I'll just take it off your hands...Go and buy a Martin. I'll take the T5.

Just teasing - I've played them but not plugged in - I talked to two owners the last time I played one and they both said it sounded awesome with distortion - is that really true?? they do have a much different than regular acoustic sound - I freaking loved it, tho.

So, uh...can I borrow your T5?? :D

I have a nice collection
Taylor 615 CE
'72 Martin D28
Guild J30
Taylor T5
Beck Strat
American Deluxe Power Tele
'93 LP Standard
G & L silver Z3
Heritage 535
Larrivee o3 12
Most gigs get the Gretsch 6120 and Taylor T5 treatment
The Martin gets the acoustic gigs (rare earth blend) with the 615
And yeah the Taylor takes quite nicely to all pedals, Barber OD, chorus, delay, compression nice guitar.....just not acoustic sounding..kinda acoustic sounding....more acoustic sounding than any other wanna be like ovation or chet atkins (gibson) or godin

Have you considered Ovation, made right there in Connecticut, New Haven I think. I'm not talkin' about the Korean cheapos, but the real ones.

You mean the real plastic ones?

Who cares what they are made of if they sound and play good? The two I own look, sound, and play great. Just another choice. You see...I'm not one of these folks who thinks something stinks or is junk just because I don't own one or particularly like the way it sounds.

Are you suggesting that Ovations are high-end guitars on par with Taylors, Martins, Larrivees, Collings, Santa Cruz, etc? Because that is what he was asking for, a "high-end" acoustic.

I never said Ovations stink or are junk. Those are your words. I just made a factual (although sarcastic) comment about "real plastic" which is what the bodies are made of.

I think Ovations are fine for what they are. I have played several over the years--although it's been a while. But IMO they are not high-end acoustics, which is what this thread is about.

Point well made, guess I strayed off course a bit. Still say that if it looks good, sounds good, and plays good...that is most important to me. I don't play enough invest that much in an instrument.

There are two types of guitarists in this world: those that love Ovations and those that hate them. I hate.

I like my Breedlove. You should definitely check them out:

Versatile and balanced. Clear as a bell. Great job integrating the electronics if you want that.

i mostly hate them because they suck.

i remember a long time ago i was at Guitar Center, and i asked the guy in the acoustic room "i'm looking for a nice acoustic/electric for around $500, what do you guys have?" and he handed me an Ovation. i was gonna laugh, but then i realized he was being serious. :o

In all fairness I have seen several touring pro musicians, including some fabulous Hawaiian slack-key guitarsits who play Ovations on stage, and they did sound very good plugged in. One of the Hawaiian slack-key guitarsits did admit, however, that at home he plays a Goodall--now those are some high-end guits! :)

i think he's probably a little on the defensive side because he's so used to people constantly trash-talking Ovations! :p :D

and you got a point, i guess they are cool if you play plugged in gigs standing up, but i think "high-end acoustic" is talking about something that's made out of all nice wood.

and sounds good. :p :D :D

This is all subjective of course. Many people really do love the Ovation sound. A lot of pros use them for concerts, plugged in. I just think they lack the warmth and depth of a "real" high-end guitar.

Sorry...didn't mean to stir up so much anger and rage :) I guess what brought it to mind is that a friend of mine, a very gifted guitar player has an ovation, one of the "high end" ones and has done some really good stuff with it. Of course just recently I learned that he is saving his $$$ for a Taylor. Hmmmm :o wonder why?

Lots of opinions on this - it's a topic that shows up every few months.

I have two Collings guitars, a 1950 Martin D-18 and a Ramirez 1A.

All of them are great guitars. I also played an early 50's Gibson J-50 which was fabulous (just didn't have the money at the time) - and have also played great Santa Cruz, Lowden, Goodall (really nice!) and several other well-known 'high-end' guitars. One tha twas really fine was an Everett - only ever saw one - it was at the Podium in St. Paul (or is it Minneapolis?).
Never played a Taylor whose sound really impressed me (although they are extremely well-made) - I guess the top Taylors are teh BMW to the others Ferrari Bentley etc. (flame me now Taylor fans)

I guess the point is that it's not the name on the headstock, its the sound that comes out of the soundhole and the way it plays.

Play lots of guitars - and then buy the one that yells at you 'I'm yours, take me home"

he probably wants a guitar that sounds pretty close to an Ovation, but costs a lot more! :D

Now if I remember correctly....this is pretty much what I said in the first place! :D Anyhow, sorry the thread strayed off course.
