As Phil Good said, tune your kit properly. If you can't, then learn. If you can't be assed, or you've tried and just cant get it then buy a Tama Tension watch.

It's a great tool that measures the tension of the drum head at different points on the drum. So you can get even tuning always, and you can record the tensions you like so you can always get the same sound back again.

I can tune. Thankfully I've always been able to, it's never been an issue for me, but i bought one anyway just becuase sometime you just can't figure out why it isnt sound good. :D

As for dampening - moongel, it's my favorite and it kills overtones without losing resonance and tone.

There are times when you have a perfect snare sound. But then when it's recorded you always notice slight overtones. So you cut up a moongel, put a tiny piece on the very edge of the drum and all your problems go away :D

I have to admit the snare is the one drum that usually has a problem. I've used a velcro tab occasionally. I replaced the shell recently and spent a lot of time making sure the bearing edge was sharp and smooth and waxed. Haven't had a problem with overtones yet. If I do I think I'll give the moon gel a try.

What the hey!

I don't have to use anything to control overtones. I know how to tune my kit. :D

The moon gels make due until I reach your stage of enlightenment ;)

If we all unanomusly decide that it's not cheating, then nobody can accuse of of cheating :D

wow those moon gels are cool.... how do they work i cant really tell what they are from all of the pictures im looking at (are they like 6 bucks a piece)

$6 for a pack of 4.

They're small bit of sticky plastic/gel that you just put on your heads. It kills the overtones. Different placement of them take out diffrent parts of the tone. They stay stuck on you head, but you can easily peel them off and they leave no residue on the head.

Drum shop... or somewhere online. lol.

Sorry i don't know any american drum shops so can't be specific. I'd imagine that musiciansfriend do them though.
