As Phil Good said, tune your kit properly. If you can't, then learn. If you can't be assed, or you've tried and just cant get it then buy a Tama Tension watch.
It's a great tool that measures the tension of the drum head at different points on the drum. So you can get even tuning always, and you can record the tensions you like so you can always get the same sound back again.
I can tune. Thankfully I've always been able to, it's never been an issue for me, but i bought one anyway just becuase sometime you just can't figure out why it isnt sound good.
As for dampening - moongel, it's my favorite and it kills overtones without losing resonance and tone.
There are times when you have a perfect snare sound. But then when it's recorded you always notice slight overtones. So you cut up a moongel, put a tiny piece on the very edge of the drum and all your problems go away
