There is a hot new overhead mic'ing technique sweeping the web it's called the Van Mauer technique.
It has yeilded some great results and I love the way it sounds.
Has anyone tried this?

Oh, yeah there's a million of 'em. Condensers vs. dynamics, louder equals better, "mastering software", you can't get a good sound from emulators, etc. ad nauseum

This is different in that it's a simple, fairly harmless prank and not a serious belief, and I probably shouldn't lump it in with the others the way I did (sorry, rockerdude!). But if it keeps up, I'll bet you even money that we'll still be answering questions about the Van Mauler technique five years from now

I heard it was a method to mic an acoustic guitar using overheads. I haven't tried it yet. Wonder if it will work on guitar amps also.....

No. That's called "A Spaced Pair with SM81's".

"Van Mauer" technique is using a wider than normal spacing on the SM81's with a tilt back angle tword the toms like recorder man technique

I use ATS stuff....sorry.......

That would work well with the "SouthSIDE Glen" technique for electric guitar which I hope catches on. I take an SM57 and place it close to the cone of a guitar amp and angle it in towards the voice coil. Oh yeah, and then there's the "SouthSIDE Glen" technique for recording vocals by placing a U87 a few inches in front of the singer's mouth with a pop filter placed in-between.

I'm working on a new "SouthSIDE Glen" technique for digital recording where I use either a mouse or a keyboard to "click" the big red button on the computer screen when I start recording, and then the button with the big black square when I'm done. I'm still working out the kinks....

OK, I'm not clear on this "Van Mauer" technique. Somebody help me out here. So you use some vaseline. Do you use one hand, or two? And if it's a spaced technique, does that mean you need an assistant?-Richie
