Drossfile, remember that Pyrrho guy? He was a bit of a tool in your Pearl thread!

only a true master would be able to answer questions before they're asked.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

And the question was: Can you give me an overly technical, yet generic and confusing answer to the things that affect the sound of drums?

Dammit! Now I know the question AND the answer, will my brain implode and the Universe disappear, only to be replaced with something bigger and more confusing? :D

you're damn tootin' i remember that jackass! and he had plenty to say until i suggested he find me a price on the new pearl masters (of course since then prices have become available, and are WAY exorbitant). after i asked him to put up some real info, he magically vanished. i mentioned that to ermghoti recently too--he'd forgotten all about it. i wonder whatever happened to our know-it-all buddy pyrrho?

Dr. Z

I have a problem
I have drum that sounds like a metal drum. Usually that wouldn't be a problem but i feel like hearing wood. I tried to tape wood onto my drum but it didn't help. What should i do?

should i tape more wood onto the shell of my drum?

You need wood heads. Get some oak and have it planed down pretty thin and bolt it to your lugs.

well what kind of wood should i use because according to dr.z
oak, not sound like maple, maple, not sound like birch, birch, not sound like, walnut.

So i am just completely confused!

Well, it seems that oak not sound like maple, and maple not sound like birch. But it doesn't say anywhere that oak not sound like birch. So, if you want an oak sound, you must use birch.

Now what is the difference from the birch at home depot to a birch tree in the woods. should i use a stain or anything to change the sound?

wow!

I am sorry i doubted Dr. Z

I went to home depot and picked up some birch and put it through the meat slicer. I sliced it very thin to attempt to get a good tone.(I still didn't have faith)

So i put the head on and this what i got

Sure, it is a deep woody tone but not what i was looking for but then i remembered some advice. You must tune the drums. So i tuned up the birch head and wow!
This was my result...

In conclusion, I will never doubt Dr. Z again!

thanks, I feel like everyone should switch over to wooden heads.

I just wish Dr. Z could tell me his thoughts on these clips.

That is very true im thinking of switching instructors to you Greg_L.

Im just wishing you can erase Dr. Z's teachings and can give me that HR discount.

Will do! Welcome home, my pupil. I'll take you under my wing and exorcise all that zaragemca nonsense out of your head.

You see Zaragemca? Another lost percussionist soul has been saved by the Dr. G_L method. My offer to mentor you still stands. No hard feelings. I'll get you on the right track to percussion nirvana.
