Answered your own question! Chiptunes - depending on how much of a purist you are - is music that either uses or emulates old video game hardware and noises.

So this is a pretty pure chiptune in that it's only composed of sounds you could produce on an old SNES or Commodore 64 (or whatever). (Although I didn't listen to ensure that you got the number of channels right?)

A lot of the stuff I do is really impure chiptunes in that I sample old VG noises and add them to other instrumentation.

Other examples would be Horse the Band and I Fight Dragons (who both use old VG controllers as control/midi interfaces).
Then if you youtube chiptune, you'll find about a bajillion covers of popular songs in the more pure style.

Impressive stuff technically, and the 'step up' at around 0.40 is good. I get the 'what' and 'how' but I'm struggling with the 'why'. Does anyone listen to this type of music for pleasure or is it more of a technical exercise? I don't mean this to piss on anyone's parade (not that the original poster appears to be around anyway), just curious.

Laughs and Ringtones. However, I have no idea why ringtones exist, so to me it still doesn't answer the question of why.
